SUMMARY:World Music Therapy Day - Tunes Good for the Soul
DESCRIPTION:Every year on March 1st\, World Music Therapy Day shines a light on music therapists worldwide. The day also showcases how music provides a way to make life better and more fulfilling. \n\n\n\nMany people refer to music as a universal language. Music therapy is rooted in the healing effect it has on human beings. Music therapy has proven to be an effective way to address physical\, cognitive\, social\, and emotional needs of children\, seniors\, and people with disabilities. People with cerebral palsy\, autism\, learning disabilities\, and many other types of disabilities see benefits of receiving music therapy. \n\n\n\nMusic therapy often includes singing\, listening to music\, creating music\, moving to music\, and using instruments. \n\n\n\nResearch proves that music therapy is effective for: \n\n\n\n\nPromoting movement\n\n\n\nProviding ways to communicate\n\n\n\nProviding ways to express feelings\n\n\n\n\nMusic therapists provide this type of therapy. Music therapists need a bachelor’s degree in music therapy from an accredited school in the United States. They must also have 1\,200 hours of clinical training. According to the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA)\, there are 8\,000 music therapists in the United States. Other countries also have music therapy associations around the world\, including Argentina\, England\, France\, Austria\, Canada\, Switzerland\, India\, Japan\, and Spain. \n\n\n\nSince music is portable\, music therapists provide their services in a variety of environments. They go to schools\, hospitals\, nursing homes\, and even a client’s home. The success of music therapy allows some schools to implement music therapy in their special education programs. Music helps children in special education develop rhythm and motor skills as well as increase memorization skills. It also promotes children to behave appropriately and offers a distraction from discomfort and anxiety.

SUMMARY:National Old Stuff Day
DESCRIPTION:Always observed on March 2nd\, National Old Stuff Day gives notice to all that old stuff and encourages you to try something new. Well\, maybe not ALL the old stuff\, but some of it. It’s a day to break out of the old routines and experience new ones. \n\n\n\nWe have all heard the saying\, “same old\, same old.” Well\, this is the day to do things differently. There is no limit to how you can change up your day. Take a moment to recognize the things that you do each day. Is there a better\, more efficient way? Examine the route you take to work. Evaluate how you fold laundry. Perhaps there’s an improved way of cleaning windows.  \n\n\n\nMaybe it’s just a way to brighten your day or someone else’s day. Whatever it is\, strive to make the day new\, not the same old day it was yesterday. \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE #NationalOldStuffDay\n\n\n\n\nApproach the day with a new attitude.\n\n\n\nConsider alternatives to each of the choices you make each day. Is there a better or equal alternative?\n\n\n\nTry making a new choice when available.  \n\n\n\nUse an old item for a new use.\n\n\n\nLook at things from a new perspective.\n\n\n\nThrow out all you know about something and relearn it all anew\n\n\n\nTake something old and freshen it up – clean it\, paint it\, fix it\, give it a haircut\n\n\n\nOrder a small instead of a large.\n\n\n\nVisit the National Day Calendar Classroom for Old Stuff projects and lessons.\n\n\n\nUse #NationalOldStuffDay to post on social media.

SUMMARY:National I Want You to be Happy Day
DESCRIPTION:National I Want You to be Happy Day on March 3rd encourages us to do something that makes others happy. It also asks us to see others’ happiness from their point of view. Putting a smile on someone’s face tends to put one on ours\, too. Genuine happiness takes effort. While we’re not individually responsible for others’ happiness\, we do play a role in spreading joy and good cheer. One way to do that is to see happiness from another person’s perspective. Happiness doesn’t fit a mold. Everything from being a morning person or a night owl\, a favorite season and seafood can make or break a person’s general idea of happiness. A person’s overall journey through life gives them a unique outlook on happiness\, too. Being happy may merely be about quality\, not quantity. \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE #IWantYouToBeHappyDay \n\n\n\n\nStart the day with a happy thought and carry it with you throughout the day.\n\n\n\nMake someone smile. Give a flower or tell a silly knock-knock joke there.\n\n\n\nBuy the person’s coffee standing in line behind you.\n\n\n\nRemind your kids how much you love them.\n\n\n\nLeave a sticky note for a co-worker telling them to have a spectacular day\, a happy day.\n\n\n\nDraw a happy face in the snow for a stranger to come across later. Give someone a hug.\n\n\n\nConsider someone else’s happiness from their point of view.\n\n\n\nUse #IWantYouToBeHappyDay to post on social media.

SUMMARY:National Cereal Day
DESCRIPTION:NATIONAL CEREAL DAY\n\n\n\nMarch 7th urges us to get our bowl spoon ready for National Cereal Day each year! Since the end of the 19th century\, cereal has become America’s most popular breakfast food. \n\n\n\nNow\, not only is cereal eaten for breakfast\, but it has become a popular bedtime snack. Some people even enjoy a bowl for an evening meal. Bakers turn to cereal in their cake\, cookie\, and bar recipes. The most popular one is Rice Crispy Bar Treats. \n\n\n\nA Little Cereal History:\n\n\n\nFerdinand Schumacher\, a German immigrant\, began the cereal revolution in 1854 with a hand oats grinder in the back room of a small store in Akron\, Ohio. His German Mills American Oatmeal Company was the nation’s first commercial oatmeal manufacturer.  In 1877\, Schumacher adopted the Quaker symbol\, the first registered trademark for a breakfast cereal. \n\n\n\nGranula\, the first breakfast cereal\, was invented in the United States in 1863 by James Caleb Jackson\, operator of Our Home on the Hillside\, which was later replaced by the Jackson Sanatorium in Dansville\, New York.  The cereal never became popular since it was inconvenient as the heavy bran nuggets needed soaking overnight before they were tender enough to eat. \n\n\n\nDo you remember mornings eating a bowl of cereal\, reading the back of the box and trying to find the toy inside the box? \n\n\n\nThe cereal industry rose from a combination of sincere religious beliefs and commercial interest in healthy foods. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg experimented with granola.  He boiled some wheat\, rolled it into thin films\, and baked the resulting flakes in the oven; he acquired a patent in 1891.  In 1895 he launched Cornflakes\, which overnight captured a national market. \n\n\n\nIn 1906\, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg’s brother\, William K. Kellogg\, after working for John\, broke away\, bought the corn flakes rights from his brother\, and set up the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company.  His signature on every package became the company trademark and insurance of quality. \n\n\n\nCharles W. Post introduced Grape-nuts in 1898 and soon followed with Post Toasties. \n\n\n\nBecause of Kellogg and Post\, the city of Battle Creek\, Michigan is nicknamed the “Cereal Capital of the World.” \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE #NationalCerealDay\n\n\n\n\nGive a shout-out to your favorite cereal brand.\n\n\n\nHave a bowl for breakfast\, lunch\, and dinner.\n\n\n\nShare it as a snack.\n\n\n\nCreate a delicious recipe from cereal and share your recipes.\n\n\n\nUse #NationalCerealDay to post on social media.

SUMMARY:International Women's Day
DESCRIPTION:INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY\n\n\n\nInternational Women’s Day on March 8th each year celebrates the social\, economic\, and political achievements of women around the world. The day also brings international awareness to gender parity. According to the World Economic Forum\, global gender equality is estimated to be achieved by 2133. \n\n\n\nGender equality is equal access to the same rights and opportunities regardless of gender. These rights and opportunities include: \n\n\n\n\nhealthcare\n\n\n\neducation\n\n\n\nemployment / economic gain\n\n\n\npay\n\n\n\nprotection under the law\n\n\n\nright to vote\n\n\n\nfree from violence\n\n\n\n\nStriving for Change\n\n\n\nHolding Political Office\n\n\n\nJust over 100 years ago\, only .2 % of the United States Congress consisted of women. Actually\, the 65th Congress was comprised of a single woman. In 1916\, Montana elected Republican Jeannette Rankin as the first Congresswoman to hold a federal office. Fast forward to the year 2020 and women hold 23.7% of the U.S. Congressional seats. While that might seem like progress\, according to United Nations statistics\, the U.S. percentage matches exactly the worldwide average for women in political office.  \n\n\n\nEducation\n\n\n\nIn many parts of the world\, women are less likely to own land\, a business\, or attend school. Education alone is a powerful tool leading to financial independence for women. Their children reap the rewards\, often for generations to come. Additionally\, when the women of a community prosper\, so does the community. Educated women and girls are more likely to educate their offspring. They also have a better understanding of healthcare and understand their rights.  \n\n\n\nEqual Pay\n\n\n\nAccording to the United Nations\, more than half of the world’s poorest people are women. International Women’s Day strives to bring economic power to women who are not allowed to work for pay or work for low wages. And despite strides in industrialized countries\, there is still work to do there\, too.  \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE #InternationalWomensDay \n\n\n\nAround the world\, organizations\, communities\, and individuals organize events focused on the mission of gender parity\, celebrating the achievements of women worldwide and education. \n\n\n\n\nAttend a lecture\, seminar\, or festival.\n\n\n\nOrganize an event.\n\n\n\nSpeak or perform at a local fundraiser.\n\n\n\nParticipate in a march for women’s equal rights.\n\n\n\nLearn about the women who paved the way for many of the rights and freedoms we have today.\n\n\n\nBecome involved in your local\, state\, or national political system.\n\n\n\nInvite others to join you\, including other women\, sons\, brothers\, sisters\, and daughters.\n\n\n\nShare your job skills at a local career fair.\n\n\n\nCelebrate all month long. It is also National Women’s History Month.\n\n\n\nUse #InternationalWomensDay when posting on Social Media.

SUMMARY:National Get Over It Day
DESCRIPTION:Each year on the 9th of March\, people across the country observe National Get Over It Day. Just as it implies\, the day is to do exactly that\, GET OVER IT. \n\n\n\n“It” may be a variety of things. Sometimes we need to get over the small things like spilled milk or traffic. Even news such as being passed over for a promotion\, poor grades\, or an argument with a family member shouldn’t cause us to live our lives in a state of misery forever.  \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE #NationalGetOverItDay \n\n\n\n\nDon’t fume over something minor any longer.\n\n\n\nSettle the score with yourself and your burden will feel lighter.\n\n\n\nSay goodbye to the worry of the “if onlys” and “what ifs” and look forward to days with a more positive attitude. \n\n\n\nHost an obstacle course race and see who gets over the objects in their path the fastest.\n\n\n\nGet over that cold that’s been nagging you for weeks. \n\n\n\nHas something trivial been weighing on your mind? Get over it and use #NationalGetOverItDay to post on social media.

SUMMARY:National Good Samaritan Day
DESCRIPTION:National Good Samaritan Day on March 13th recognizes the unselfish actions of those who provide help when needed. The day is also known as Good Samaritan Involvement Day and celebrates kindness in all its forms. \n\n\n\nThe term “good Samaritan” comes from the Bible parable where a Samaritan helped a stranger who had been robbed and beaten and left to die by the side of the road. The Samaritan not only cleaned the man’s wounds and clothed him but took him to an inn where he paid for the man’s care. \n\n\n\nThe term is used today to describe those who perform acts of kindness for those in need\, especially those who are strangers. \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE #GoodSamaritanDay\n\n\n\n\nMake an effort to help someone who is struggling or having a problem. \n\n\n\nShare a story about someone who was a Good Samaritan in your life.\n\n\n\nThe act of a Good Samaritan can be large or small. Something as simple as a phone call to as inconvenient as stopping to help change a tire are all acts of a good Samaritan. \n\n\n\nMake a commitment to developing a habit of kindness and awareness of others. \n\n\n\nVolunteer. Offer your valuable skills to others in times of need. Do you enjoy sports or have mad math skills? Your ability to mentor youth may change someone’s life for the better.\n\n\n\nUse #GoodSamaritanDay to post on social media.

SUMMARY:National Write Your Story Day
DESCRIPTION:NATIONAL WRITE YOUR STORY DAY\n\n\n\nEveryone has a story and on March 14th\, National Write Your Story Day challenges you to tell your story in written form. \n\n\n\nYou may think to yourself\, “There’s nothing in my life to tell.” It will surprise you once you put pen to paper\, or fingers to keyboard and the words start filling the pages. Words have a way of triggering memories. They form a moment in time\, and before you know it\, there’s a story flowing from your fingertips. Even if you never share your tale\, it can be an essence of who you are and where you’ve been. \n\n\n\nTrips down memory lane or recreating the moment when a spark of inspiration occurred\, are more intriguing than you know. Today\, they fill blogs\, inspire novels and entire television series. More importantly\, they are treasures to family and loved ones. \n\n\n\nThe observance encourages us to start telling our personal stories today. There’s a story worth recounting in there somewhere!

SUMMARY:National Memory Day
DESCRIPTION:Uh…what day is it again? Oh yes\, that’s right – it’s National Memory Day! (Sometimes it can be hard to remember.)  \n\n\n\nAlthough many people believe that they simply are born with a bad memory\, a great deal of research has shown that the memory parts of the brain can be stretched and exercised just like the body. So those who want to improve their memories can do so in a variety of ways. \n\n\n\nFitting closely with the beginning of spring\, National Memory Day might be the perfect day to celebrate the amazing gift of memory – before you forget and the day is over. If forgetting seems likely\, go ahead and tie a string around that finger to be sure to remember to celebrate this day! \n\n\n\nHistory of National Memory Day\n\n\n\nThe discipline of studying human memory dates back at least 2000 years. Aristotle was a philosopher who believed that humans are born with a mind like a blank slate and memories are imprinted on them in a way similar to making an impression on wax. This philosophy leans toward the “nurture” side of the “nature vs. nurture” question. And scientists have been trying to learn about memory ever since. \n\n\n\nThe brain is a complex and mysterious organ that is extremely difficult to study. However\, modern technology has brought significant advances to the understanding of the processes of memory. A study has revealed that the brain goes through three memory processes: encoding\, storage\, and retrieval. So in order to be able to recall memories\, all three processes must be working well! \n\n\n\nWhile it might be hard to believe that it starts that young\, scientific research has shown that the first memories in human development begin in the womb\, even before a baby is born. And although the capacity of the human memory is considered to be basically limitless\, most people cannot recall memories that happened to them prior to the age of 3-4. Some scientists believe it’s not that the memories aren’t there\, it’s simply that they are unable to be recalled. \n\n\n\nNational Memory Day is the perfect time to enjoy a variety of memory-related activities–and to think about someone who might struggle with memory a little bit more. \n\n\n\nHow to Celebrate National Memory Day\n\n\n\nFor those who remember to make a little extra effort and plan ahead\, celebrating National Memory Day can be a load of fun whether alone or with a group of friends or family members. Clever and fun ideas for celebrating the day might include: \n\n\n\nGet a Good Night of Sleep \n\n\n\nMost people don’t realize that getting enough sleep is a critical factor in the ability to have a sharp memory. People who have healthy sleep lives are more effectively able to store and retrieve long-term memories. \n\n\n\nFor those who struggle to sleep\, try practicing healthy sleep hygiene habits such as cutting out caffeine\, dimming the lights\, turning off electronic devices at least an hour before bedtime\, reading a boring book\, and going to bed/waking up at the same time every day. \n\n\n\nWatch Finding Dory\n\n\n\nA spinoff of the first Disney Pixar film\, Finding Nemo\, this animated movie features the voice of Ellen Degeneres as Dory\, Nemo’s memory-impaired friend. Dory\, the adorably forgetful blue-eyed tang fish can only keep her thoughts straight for about 10 seconds\, and then she has to start over. \n\n\n\nIn the story\, she does somehow know that she was separated from her parents when she was younger. So\, Dory and her friends\, Nemo and Marlin\, set out on an adventure to find her parents and\, ultimately\, release them from captivity. It’s a delightful look at friendship and tenacity\, even when forgetfulness gets in the way! \n\n\n\nMake Memories for the Future \n\n\n\nSpend the day with people you love\, doing things you love\, and capture it in your mind and heart to keep for the future. For those who want to keep a creative record of the day\, it can be fun to make a memory book or scrapbook. \n\n\n\nPeople who are interested in looking back from the future might consider creating a time capsule. Fill it with interesting things that represent this current season of life\, what’s important or interesting about today\, friends and family who are a part of life. Then bury it in a special place. Choose a time in the future (maybe 10 or 20 years from now) when it will be time to go back and dig it up. The memories will be fascinating! \n\n\n\nParticipate in Memory Games\n\n\n\nLike any other part of the physical body\, the brain and memory need exercise in order to stay in tip-top shape. Memory loss is less likely to occur in old age for those who work hard at exercising their minds. \n\n\n\nWhy not try one of those on-line brain games to test out how well your memory skills function? Or devise your own test at work – cover your eyes and try to remember all the items on your colleague’s desk. \n\n\n\nOr what about trying to remember the lines from your favorite TV show’s theme song from back when you were a child? Some experts say that even simply doing a sudoku or crossword puzzle regularly can help keep the memory sharp and the brain in its best working order.

SUMMARY:As Young As You Feel Day
DESCRIPTION:As Young As You Feel Day is a day for losing your inhibitions! \n\n\n\nIf you are in good health\, but feel restricted by how you are expected to behave\, then As Young As You Feel Day is the time to rebel! We only live this life once and As Young As You Feel Day is a good reminder to us that age is a number\, and shouldn’t be used to stop us enjoying ourselves. You can celebrate As Young As You Feel Day by having that outrageous hairstyle you wanted when you were a teenager. Or dig out those clothes you wore when you were younger – they may even fit\, too. If you have teenagers you can ‘get down with the kids’ on As Young As You Feel Day – and shock them for a change.
