SUMMARY:National Lung Cancer Day - Awareness and Prevention
DESCRIPTION:WORLD LUNG CANCER DAY\n\n\n\nWorld Lung Cancer Day occurs each year on August 1. The day takes the opportunity to bring awareness about lung cancer causes and prevention. \n\n\n\nAccording to the American Lung Association\, lung cancer is the leading cause of death among cancer patients.  Luckily\, when diagnosed early enough\, lung cancer survival rates increase five or more years by almost 56 percent. However\, prevention is necessary in order to detect and treat lung cancer before it spreads. \n\n\n\nLung cancer can affect anyone. Because the disease doesn’t discriminate\, it’s important for everyone to review their risk factors. While several high-risk factors attribute to lung cancer a few include air pollution\, smoking\, exposure to secondhand smoke\, and exposure to dangerous chemicals like radon gas. \n\n\n\nOne of the first steps to protecting your health is talking to your health care provider. Review your family medical history.  Furthermore\, your medical provider can help you decide your risk levels and schedule any necessary screening. Although a health screening does not prevent disease\, it does help combat the spread of disease through early detection. \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE #WORLDLUNGCANCERDAY\n\n\n\nIf your family history includes lung cancer\, encourage a family member to get screened. Make a day of it by scheduling the screening for both of you and having lunch afterward. By using #WorldLungCancerDay on social media\, you will show support. Also\, educate others on lung cancer prevention and treatment. \n\n\n\nHelpful tips for early detection\, as noted by the American Lung Association: \n\n\n\nLung cancer screening tests.Refraining from tobacco use.Testing your home for radon.Avoiding overexposure to cancer-causing chemicals.Eating healthy and exercising regularly.\n\n\n\nVisit the American College of Chest Physicians to learn how to spread the word about lung cancer.

SUMMARY:National Watermelon Day
DESCRIPTION:NATIONAL WATERMELON DAY | AUGUST 3\n\n\n\nNational Watermelon Day on August 3 recognizes the refreshing summertime treat enjoyed at picnics and fairs!  And since watermelon is 92% water\, it is very satisfying in the summer heat. \n\n\n\n#NationalWatermelonDay\n\n\n\nThis vine-like flowering plant originated from southern Africa. While the word watermelon refers to both the fruit and the plant to botanists\, the plant is a pepo. The pepo is a berry with a thick rind and fleshy center. Interestingly\, pepos develop from an inferior ovary. They are also characteristic of the Cucurbitaceae\, a scientific term for the gourd family. \n\n\n\nWhile the watermelon fruit is loosely considered a type of melon\, unlike other melons\, it’s not in the genus Cucumis. The smooth exterior usually produces a dark green rind with stripes or yellow spots. Watermelons produce a juicy\, sweet interior flesh ranging from deep red to pink. However\, sometimes it comes in orange\, yellow\, or white. While melon holds plentiful water\, wild melons tasted bland and bitter. This clue suggests that desert dwellers likely cultivated the first melon. The seeds and art found in the tombs of Pharoh’s supply additional clues to the watermelon’s value. tombs of Pharaohs. Over time\, cultivation and breeding brought out the better qualities of the sweet and tender fruit we enjoy today.  \n\n\n\nWith proper growing conditions\, watermelons grow to enormous sizes. Around the world\, competitions award prizes each year for the largest one. The Guinness Book of World Records states that the heaviest watermelon weighed 262 pounds. SUMMARY:National Happiness Happens Day
DESCRIPTION:For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness. Ralph Waldo Emerson \n\n\n\nSmile on August 8th to share in National Happiness Happens Day. On this day each year just let it happen. You know.  Happiness.  Because happiness happens.  \n\n\n\n#HappinessHappensDay\n\n\n\nThe day encourages happiness all day. Recognize every moment of glee\, joy\, delight\, and pleasure. Don’t let it pass. Most importantly\, a flicker of a giggle should be given its due\, and should it blossom into full-blown happiness\, don’t be surprised. It happens! \n\n\n\nAnother element of the day prohibits the squashing of other people’s happiness. From time to time\, we might find other’s happiness might seem irritating. Those moments happen when we have particularly rotten days. However\, our bad days don’t give us the right to squash another person’s joy. Instead\, allow their delight in the day to infect us. Perhaps\, their ability to smile will blow the storm clouds away from your day.   \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL HAPPINESS HAPPENS DAY\n\n\n\nShare your happiness and seek ways to infuse happiness in your life. Make it happen! Use #HappinessHappensDay to post on social media and let others know to do the same. \n\n\n\nAre you looking for more ways to boost your happiness level? Well\, we have 14 Ways to Foster Happiness in Your Life that we think are worth sharing. \n\n\n\nhttps://nationaldaycalendar.com/14-ways-to-foster-happiness-in-your-life/

SUMMARY:National Lazy Day - Take A Break
DESCRIPTION:On August 10th\, National Lazy Day gives us permission to relax and kick back. So\, we’re going to be a bit lazy here. \n\n\n\n#NationalLazyDay\n\n\n\nAs you can see\, there is not much information regarding this annually celebrated holiday as we do not feel like doing any research. Actually\, we do not feel like doing anything at all. Consequently\, we are in our hammocks with a couple of good books and glasses of lemonade and iced tea. Yes\, it is a Lazy Day. We choose to be lazy rather than tell much more about this day. \n\n\n\nSometimes we need to take time for ourselves and have a “lazy day”. Enjoy!

SUMMARY:National Tell a Joke Day - Let's Get Funny!
DESCRIPTION:NATIONAL TELL A JOKE DAY | AUGUST 16\n\n\n\nWhat happened to the comedian on August 16th during National Tell A Joke Day? Everyone stole his punchlines! All joking aside\, get out there and laugh a little and tell some funny ones.#TellAJokeDay \n\n\n\nThis day will be filled with smiles and laughter from morning till night. Jokes consist of humorous stories\, either written or verbal\, that often end with a punchline. While slapstick includes props and even minor stunts on the part of the storyteller\, the best jokes are usually short. They involve a little misdirection and a well-delivered punchline. The more jokes you tell\, the more fun you will have\, and so will those around you.

SUMMARY:National Be an Angel Day
DESCRIPTION:On August 22nd\, National Be an Angel Day encourages good deeds and kindness to others. By supporting those in need and inspiring others to kindness\, we display an act of an angel here on earth. \n\n\n\n#BeAnAngelDay\n\n\n\nThe day also recognizes those who’ve been angels to us. Sometimes we have a terrible day. Whether its bad news or poor planning\, we all have them. A kind word\, a hug\, or even a pleasant atmosphere makes a difference. \n\n\n\nOther times\, days\, even weeks\, can be devastating. A loss\, illness\, or overwhelming news takes the wind from our sails. Those angels provide comfort at a time when we need it most. \n\n\n\nThe same happens to the people around us. We don’t always know what others may be enduring. We can be an angel in big and small ways. Whether we know a person’s concerns or not\, merely offering to join them for a meal may relieve their stress. Having someone to listen to often is something we need most. \n\n\n\nNoticing someone’s efforts is another way we can be an angel. Letting them know you’re impressed with their stamina\, talent\, progress – fill in the blanks. These positive comments provide morale-boosting energy. \n\n\n\nAny time we see someone in need\, the opportunity arises to offer help.  Assist an elderly neighbor with lawn care. Don’t overlook the single parents when setting up play dates. Their children – and the parents – need social interaction\, too. \n\n\n\nAlso\, when you value someone’s time\, effort\, and presence\, don’t hesitate to tell them. We may be individual people\, but we don’t thrive alone. Look out for each other. \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL BE AN ANGEL DAY\n\n\n\nBe someone’s angel. Offer an ear to listen\, a hand to lift them up\, or a shoulder to hold them up until they can stand again. Give patience when you least feel like giving it. Hear the pain below the complaint or the exhaustion under the frustration. Notice the worry\, not the anger. Look with eyes that see the whole person\, not just the fraction of a moment. Hold a hand when there’s nothing else that can be done. Dry a tear. Thank an angel. Use #BeAnAngelDay to share on social media.

To make a banana split\, cut the banana lengthwise and place it in the dish. Then add scoops of vanilla\, chocolate\, and strawberry ice cream between the slices of banana. Each scoop gets a topping; add crushed pineapple to the strawberry\, drizzle chocolate syrup over the vanilla\, and add strawberry topping to the chocolate. Next\, sprinkle with crushed nuts. Finally\, garnish with whipped cream and maraschino cherries.

SUMMARY:National Grief Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:On August 30\, National Grief Awareness Day recognizes the time it takes to heal from loss doesn’t have a prescribed course and is a reminder closure comes in many forms. When a loved one dies\, the void they leave affects everyone differently. \n\n\n\n#GriefAwarenessDay\n\n\n\nThroughout the day\, take stock of those in your life who have been affected by a form of loss. The death of a loved one\, a close friend or enduring an extreme change in their lifestyle can trigger grief. When we lose the stability of shelter\, a job or a routine we have known for years\, we suffer a type of loss that requires closure. Some adjust to these changes easily\, and others take time to become familiar with new routines. \n\n\n\nOffer to listen to a friend or ask them to join you for a coffee or tea. Send a message letting them know they are never far from your mind. Then\, set a date for another visit.  If you find you are suffering from grief\, know that it’s natural. You’re not alone\, and it’s okay to ask for help if you feel your grief is overwhelming. \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL GRIEF AWARENESS DAY\n\n\n\nLook for signs of grief in yourself and your loved ones. Self-care is vital after and during a loss. There’s no shame in seeking assistance with grief if the pain becomes overwhelming. \n\n\n\nVisit www.change.org to find out more\, sign the petition\, and use #GriefAwarenessDay to share on social media. \n\n\n\nNATIONAL GRIEF AWARENESS DAY HISTORY\n\n\n\nAngie Cartwright founded National Grief Awareness Day in 2014. Familiar with loss\, Cartwright too became lost in grief. She has become dedicated to bringing support to those who have suffered like her and enlightening others to the realities of bereavement. \n\n\n\nGrief Awareness FAQ\n\n\n\nQ. Does grief always involve death?A. No. Many circumstances may cause a person grief. We may grieve the loss of a job or income. Physical or mental trauma may cause us grief. We also experience grief when dramatic changes occur in our life – divorce\, a breakup\, empty nesting\, a health event\, or an unexpected discovery can all cause grief. \n\n\n\nQ. Does everyone experience grief the same?A. No. While many people will go through the same stages\, it may take one person longer to navigate one stage while another person experiences the stage quickly. \n\n\n\nQ. Does grief end?A. Grief lessens but it may never go away. Sometimes a memory or event will bring up feelings of grief long after death or trauma. Over time\, we become better equipped to deal with these moments. \n\n\n\nExperiencing a crisis? KRCC CRISIS HOTLINE 24/7: 1-800-262-7491

SUMMARY:National Eat Outside Day
DESCRIPTION:NATIONAL EAT OUTSIDE DAY | AUGUST 31- Possibly a picnic in the park?\n\n\n\nFriends\, fresh air\, and good food are the focus of National Eat Outside Day every year on August 31. Whether at home\, a park\, a favorite restaurant or food truck\, or the beach\, food just tastes better when we eat it under the open sky. \n\n\n\n#NationalEatOutdoorsDay\n\n\n\nMany foods lend themselves to eating outdoors but sometimes it’s as simple as taking your prepared plate out to the balcony\, porch\, or patio. Also known as al fresco dining\, many restaurants offer patio seating so their patrons can enjoy their meals while taking in the city\, beach\, countryside or just people watch. Even more temperate climates offer seasonal outdoor dining. \n\n\n\nEat Outside Day encourages you to taste the sunshine (or the moonlight) while eating your meal. It’s like a mini stay-cation where you get to recharge while enjoying a delicious feast outdoors.
