SUMMARY:National Pay Back A Friend Day - Improving Interpersonal Relationships
DESCRIPTION:After conducting an in-depth study on how money affects relationships\, Bank of America designated October 17 as National Pay Back a Friend Day. This study\, which is called the “Friends Again Report\,” found that 53% of its participants have ended a friendship after they loaned a friend money and were never paid back. As a way to combat this issue\, National Pay Back a Friend Day was created. So on October 17\, put away the bad feelings\, pull up your mobile payment apps\, and start paying your (ex) friends back.

SUMMARY:October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every two minutes\, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. And though only 1% of men get diagnosed with the affliction\, it’s important that they too are educated on the disease. Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate\, so make sure to self check your breast tissue regularly\, regardless of your gender. \n\n\n\nThis year National Mammography Day lands on October 20. Occurring every third Friday of October\, National Mammography Day is a cousin to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They’re both committed to women’s self care but this day is set aside specifically to encourage women to take the time to make an appointment. Early detection means early treatment and the difference between life and death.

SUMMARY:National Bologna Day
DESCRIPTION:This October 24\, make sure to bring your brown bag lunches to work because it’s National Bologna Day! Everyone’s favorite processed luncheon meat has its own day. Bologna is named after the Italian city of the same name\, but down there they call it mortadella\, which is a sausage with bits of lard and peppercorns in it. American Bologna\, as you may have noticed\, is distinctly different\, but no less loved the world over. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHISTORY OF NATIONAL BOLOGNA DAY\n\n\n\nWhile the history of National Bologna Day may be short\, the history of bologna is long and lasting. For example\, in 1661\, mortadella (bologna’s European cousin) was so protected\, the papacy decided to create a clear definition to distinguish it from other\, lesser versions of finely ground pork with chunks of fat.  \n\n\n\nBologna\, as known in America\, is mortadella without the fat chunks. It’s sold at baseball stadiums\, lunch counters\, delis\, inside tin cans\, and in the glass cases of butchers. It can be fried and thrown on toasted bread with pickles\, onions\, tomatoes\, and lettuce. It can be served cold with thick slices of cheddar and white bread. It can be chopped up and mixed with crumbled\, hard boiled eggs\, mayo\, and veggies for a bologna salad.  \n\n\n\nRegardless of how you enjoy it\, bologna came to America (most likely) with the large German immigration at the turn of the twentieth century\, establishing it as a de facto cuisine in the areas they settled in – midwest\, Appalachia\, Pennsylvania\, and parts of the south.  From there\, it quickly took firm footing as one of the most popular American foods.

SUMMARY:National I Care About You Day
DESCRIPTION:We celebrate National I Care About You Day on October 25 so plan something special for your friends and family!  This is the day where we honor everyone in our life for no other reason but to tell them we are grateful. Although this holiday was most recently launched in 2016\, this day is highly popularized through social media tags and post shares. Scroll down to learn more inventive ways on how to celebrate those who make life more beautiful. \n\n\n\nHISTORY OF NATIONAL I CARE ABOUT YOU DAY\n\n\n\nLet’s be honest: We could easily make a case that National I Care About You Day should sit atop a list of the most important days of the year. Why? Though it was only started in 2016\, what other holiday more perfectly speaks to the human condition? Money’s nice to have. Vacations are fun. And driving around in a new car makes us feel good — temporarily. None of it matters at the end though. Without love (both romantic and platonic)\, friendships\, and/or family — we’re doomed. \n\n\n\nHumans are wired for relationships. We thrive when we’re connected and feel lonely (or worse) when we’re disconnected. No amount of money can make your emotional pain heal. But friends can. Or at least they can help. So many of us crave “novelty\,” but by its very definition\, it can only last for a limited time. Suddenly you don’t even realize you’re driving that (once) new car. And ancient ruins begin to look the same starting around day 5 of your trip to Greece. Material things can’t possibly do what other people can do.  \n\n\n\nThe health experts at Northwestern University have pinpointed some of the positive effects of healthy relationships. For instance\, being in a committed relationship is linked to less production of cortisol\, a stress hormone. Good relationships can promote better healing\, as research suggests married people who have undergone heart surgery are three times more likely to survive the first three months after surgery than single patients.  \n\n\n\nHealthy relationships set the perfect tone for an overall healthy lifestyle. They give us a greater sense of purpose. It’s natural for humans to want to feel needed\, and like they’re part of something bigger. And it can even extend our lives! Research indicates that having healthy social relationships makes a bigger impact on avoiding an early demise than taking blood pressure medication or being exposed to air pollution. One study even suggests that a lack of social relationships has the same effect on health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Ugh. \n\n\n\nSo reach out on October 25th. It will make your life better and may make someone else’s better too.

SUMMARY:Frankenstein Friday
DESCRIPTION:Frankenstein Friday\, which is on the last Friday in October\, falling on October 27 this year\, was created to celebrate Mary Shelley and her famous novel “Frankenstein” (also named “The Modern Prometheus”). Mary Shelley’s creation spawned an entire genre\, countless movie adaptations\, and widespread recognition\, and from the spooky October month comes another fun celebration. Frankenstein Friday aims to immortalize and honor this monster of a book right around the time the U.S. celebrates another scary holiday. \n\n\n\nHISTORY OF FRANKENSTEIN FRIDAY\n\n\n\nHuman history has never been without monsters. Myths\, folktales\, epic stories have all had a monster or two\, even tales from ancient civilizations like the Aztecs or Incas. While appearances and characteristics might differ\, these monsters have appeared across cultures. Of these\, Frankenstein’s monster is one of the best-known of all time. \n\n\n\nIn 1816\, Mary Shelley\, wife of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley\, traveled to Geneva\, Switzerland\, to visit their friend\, poet Lord Byron\, at Villa Diodati. The group also consisted of physician John Polidori. A volcano erupted in Indonesia causing severe rain and climate abnormalities\, meaning the group was stuck inside the house where they read ghost stories to pass the time. Lord Byron subsequently proposed a competition to see who could come up with the best ghost story. Mary Shelley won this contest with “Frankenstein”; Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley did not finish their stories\, but Polidori wrote the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”\, “The Vampyre”. “Frankenstein” was anonymously published two years after when Mary was only 20 years old. The dedication in the very first edition was to William Godwin\, Mary Shelley’s father. Percy Shelley wrote the preface\, which is why many people assumed he wrote the book. Shelley republished it under her own name in 1823\, with a third edition coming eight years later that explained how the story came to be. This final version is what most readers are familiar with today. The story spawned editions upon editions of prints in every language\, and countless movie adaptations\, over almost two centuries. \n\n\n\nWhile Shelley always maintained she came up with the name of ‘Frankenstein’ (meaning ‘Stone of the Franks’) herself\, critics believe she was influenced by a castle with the same name. The castle’s previous inhabitant was one Konrad Dippel\, an unbalanced alchemist obsessed with creating an elixir that would help people live for over a hundred years. It was rumored that he dug up bodies and experimented on them\, just like Victor Frankenstein in Shelley’s book. \n\n\n\nRyan MacCloskey from Westfield\, New Jersey\, founded Frankenstein Friday in 1997 to celebrate the characters\, the book\, and the author. He chose Friday for the celebrations because of the fun alliteration it makes with Frankenstein. Plus\, he says\, it is easier to be festive on a Friday than any other day.
