Whether it’s sweet fruit pies\, meat-filled pies with gravy or those silly whipped cream pies that people throw for comical effect\, no pie is left out during pie day and they all have an opportunity to shine! \n\n\n\nPies have been around for thousands of years and the recipe hasn’t changed much. It’s still a pastry that’s filled with something\, either sweet or savory\, and served on a plate or dish that it’s baked in. It’s simple\, it’s effective and it’s incredibly filling. But what exactly do people do on National Pie Day and what is it all about? \n\n\n\nMost people see National Pie Day as an opportunity to stuff themselves with all different types of pie. This may be especially easy during National Pie Day as many stores and bakeries have started to celebrate it\, offering discounts or even free pies as part of the celebration. However\, others prefer to use National Pie Day as an excuse to bake something of their own\, usually with the intention of sharing it with friends and family members. Even if you don’t have a clue how to bake\, this might be a perfect opportunity to learn! \n\n\n\nHistory of National Pie Day\n\n\n\nNational Pie Day was started in the mid-1970s by Charlie Papazian. Papazian worked as a nuclear engineer in Boulder\, Colorado but also had experience as a brewer and teacher. We’re not sure why he decided to do it\, but he declared that his birthdate would also be known as National Pie Day. Everyone seemed to agree (who wouldn’t agree to a pie day?) and ever since 1986\, it has become an official celebration that is even sponsored by the American Pie Council.

And\, of course\, it provides the most important ingredient to one of America’s favorite quick and easy meals: the Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich. \n\n\n\nSo now it’s time to celebrate National Peanut Butter Day! \n\n\n\nHistory of National Peanut Butter Day \n\n\n\nPeanut butter is a culinary treat that actually most people think is a fairly modern invention\, as food histories go. However\, that may not be exactly the case. \n\n\n\nI’m going to take this God-given gift of being funny\, and I’m going to spread it out like peanut butter on everything I do. \n\n\n\nSteve Harvey \n\n\n\nPeanut butter\, as it is known today\, has only been around for a little over a hundred years. But\, actually\, there is some evidence that ancient Aztec and Inca peoples may have been grinding peanuts into a sort of paste several hundred years ago (or maybe even a few thousand years ago!). \n\n\n\nAs far as the modern world is concerned\, peanut butter arrived via the United States at some time in the late 1800s. Some theories claim that\, like many foods\, peanut butter probably started in someone’s kitchen in their home. One popular theory suggests that a woman named Rose Davis started making peanut butter in New York at some point in the 1840s. She got the idea from her son\, who had learned about something similar that was being made in Cuba at the time. \n\n\n\nMany people credit George Washington Carver with the invention of producing peanut butter but\, while he was an amazing inventor credited with more than 300 uses for peanuts and is considered the father of the peanut industry\, Carver did not actually invent peanut butter. \n\n\n\nThe creation of modern peanut butter\, along with its production processes\, can be traced back to at least three more people. In fact\, it was Canadian Marcellus Edson who patented “peanut paste” first\, back in 1884\, but this was created from roasted peanuts. In 1895\, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg\, of the famed Kellogg’s cereal company\, filed to patent a process using raw peanuts to create peanut butter\, which was then referred to as “nut meal”. Then\, in 1903\, a peanut butter-making machine was patented by Dr. Ambrose Straub of St. Louis\, Missouri. \n\n\n\nAs far as National Peanut Butter Day is concerned\, it seems that this auspicious occasion was created many years ago\, to allow peanut butter lovers to celebrate the creation of this wonderful food. And celebration is the whole purpose of the day!

No matter how it is celebrated\, National Puzzle Day can be a healthy and fun day for people of all ages! \n\n\n\nHistory of National Puzzle Day\n\n\n\nWhile puzzles\, as we know them today\, are a fairly modern invention\, the idea of taking words and using them creatively dates back to ancient Roman times. During this time\, they used word squares and palindromes (a word or phrase that is spelled the same way forward and backward)\, and would often shuffle letters around in unique and clever ways to create new words. \n\n\n\nWhen it comes to jigsaw puzzles\, history is much more recent. Now considered to be a leisure activity\, the first versions of these puzzles were actually used for educational purposes\, particularly related to learning geography. \n\n\n\nIn fact\, the first jigsaw puzzles seem to have been developed in the mid-1700s\, by a British cartographer and engraver by the name of John Spilsbury. He started by fastening a map of Europe onto some wood and then cutting out each country. These were then used to teach children about the different countries on the continent. They became commercially available and were so popular that Spilsbury expanded with other maps too\, including the World Map\, Asia\, Africa\, America and the British Isles. \n\n\n\nAs the puzzles became more popular\, the industrial revolution helped to advance the puzzle-making processes to make lighter-weight\, more portable versions with different themes. Then\, in the late 1920s\, when the Great Depression hit the United States\, puzzles became a very popular pastime due to their affordability and the fact that they could be reused time and again–and even traded between families. \n\n\n\nOf course\, today\, jigsaw puzzles are usually made from layers of cardboard that are glued together with a picture pasted on the top. They are no longer cut with a jigsaw at all\, but use a form of laser cutting to make the pieces. \n\n\n\nIt was right around the same time the jigsaw puzzle came into being that Sudoku was also being developed. Although the name is distinctly Japanese\, the puzzle itself actually has its roots in Switzerland where a numbers game was invented\, originally called Latin Squares. Sudoku as currently known\, however\, didn’t really come about until 1979 when one was printed in a word games magazine in Indiana\, USA. At the time it was called Number Place but\, five years later\, when it was published in Japan\, they called it Sudoku. And that was the name that stuck. \n\n\n\nCrossword puzzles have an even more recent history\, only coming into use in the year 1913. In fact\, the story goes that it came about only because Arthur Wynne\, an editor of New York World\, needed a way to take up some space in the ‘fun’ section of his newspaper right around Christmastime. This “Word Cross Puzzle” became almost an overnight sensation and has been in high demand from that time on. \n\n\n\nBut puzzles aren’t just limited to the ones listed above. Other puzzles that can be enjoyed on the day include brain teasers\, logic puzzles\, cryptic puzzles\, riddles and many more. National Puzzle Day is a delightful day to celebrate! \n\n\n\nHow to Celebrate National Puzzle Day\n\n\n\nThis day can be lots of fun to celebrate\, whether on your own or with friends and family. Try out some of these ideas to enjoy the day: \n\n\n\nDo a Puzzle\n\n\n\nOf course\, the most obvious way to celebrate is the simplest! Just pull a puzzle out of the closet and put it together on a big table. Grab a crossword puzzle from a puzzle book or the daily newspaper. Or download a puzzle app on a smartphone and get to playing! \n\n\n\nCreate a Puzzle\n\n\n\nFor some people the fun of puzzles has more to do with making them than completing them. Some of the easiest puzzles to make are word search puzzles\, where words are strung together and hidden within a block of letters. It’s also possible to create your own Sudoku or crossword puzzle. \n\n\n\nThose who have access to a carpentry shop might find that a fun project would be making up a hand-crafted wooden jigsaw puzzle that a child might enjoy. Or\, keep it super simple and do this activity with a group of kids: draw a picture on a piece of paper\, cut it out creatively with scissors or a crafting knife\, and then put it back together. \n\n\n\nEat a Puzzle Sandwich\n\n\n\nMake a sandwich and then\, instead of cutting it into triangles\, cut it creatively into shapes that can be moved around and then put back together.
