SUMMARY:Western Monarch Day - Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:Get out your tiara…wait no! It’s not that day. It is Western Monarch Day. It is a day to celebrate the Western Monarch butterfly. It travels from place to place but this day specifically we give thanks for their return to the central California coast. Why is this so important? It is important to watch and make sure that they do return. The monarch butterfly is facing a terrific decline in numbers. \n\n\n\nMany conservation groups are calling for it to be protected as an endangered species and claim that the number of declines could be as high as 90%! \n\n\n\nHistory of Western Monarch Day\n\n\n\nThe Monarch butterfly is a stunning mix of grace and beauty. With rich tones of gold\, red\, yellow and orange they fly across the landscape and take over the job of pollination. They somehow know when it is time to move. Their migration can be tracked from north and east to south and west\, and then back again. \n\n\n\nAmazingly each way of the migration takes four generations! Can you imagine? Taking into account how much they pollinate\, and the fact that their migration takes such a toll on their population it is imperative to understand what their decline really means. Can you picture the toll when I say the decline of Monarch population is near 90%? Let me share a visual with you. Let’s talk people instead of insects. If we were to make a comparison\, the loss to the butterfly would be as if all the people in the United States of America died except for those in Ohio and Florida. Stunning isn’t it? \n\n\n\nWith that picture in mind\, can you now see why there is a Western Monarch Day? A day to bring awareness to this frightening decline? A day to find a way to make a difference! \n\n\n\nHow to celebrate Western Monarch Day\n\n\n\nDid you know that if we all took a few simple actions we could help to save the Western Monarch Butterfly? Currently\, three conservation groups are working to get endangered status and protection for this creature\, but is it enough? No. It isn’t. So what can I do you ask? Great question! \n\n\n\nOne way is to share a little bit of your yard with them. The main plant that they need is milkweed. This plant is critical to their survival along the migration routes that they take. It provides nectar as well as the fact that it is the only plant in which the Monarch butterfly can lay their eggs in. In the Midwest of the United States of America\, this plant is quickly disappearing as more and more land is being used for farming. \n\n\n\nIf you go to https://www.livemonarch.com/free-milkweed-seeds you can help by planting these free seeds. Give the butterflies a rest in your garden and you can help to ensure their continued well – being. When they come to feast and lay their eggs\, you will be able to help document their numbers if you choose. But better yet you can enjoy their beauty knowing you have helped them!

SUMMARY:Safer Internet Day
DESCRIPTION:https://zoo \n\n\n\nThe Internet has been an amazing invention that has undoubtedly change the world in more ways than we can think of. Not all of those ways\, unfortunately\, have been positive. We can connect to people faster\, find things easier\, and transfer information at the speed of light. These very boons of communication can become the bane of safety. So much of our private lives and information get transferred over the internet\, Safer Internet Day reminds us to protect ourselves from the dangers there and make the internet a little safer for everyone. \n\n\n\nThe internet has been a boon and a curse for teenagers. \n\n\n\nJ. K. Rowling \n\n\n\nHistory of Safer Internet Day \n\n\n\nSafer Internet Day came to exist officially in 2012\, when the US Department of Homeland Security and the European Commission decided it was time to help shepherd the growing beast that was the Internet into a playground that was safer for our youth. In America things got really going in 2013 when ConnectSafely.org was appointed to coordinate the efforts in the American theater\, and they’ve been driving it forward a little more every year. Each year they choose a theme to help promote\, and a goal that they intend to reach. What kinds of goals? \n\n\n\nIn 2015 they began to promote that year’s theme “Actions & Activism Toward a Better Net & World”\, where they focused on concerns like bullying and integration with the National Parent Teacher Association\, and working to use technology to help effect social change. This is a particularly powerful use of the tool\, given that people from every walk of life and culture from around the world can connect and communicate in ways they never could before. That’s what the Internet was for\, what it brought to us\, and the world it helped bring together. \n\n\n\nHow to celebrate Safer Internet Day \n\n\n\nThe first thing you can do to Celebrate Safer Internet Day is work towards expanding your own online safety portfolio. Know what to do if you see cases of cyberbullying\, and how to connect and communicate with people all over the world in areas of shared interest. Make sure your identity is solidly protected\, and that the people who are in your life are protected as well. Even better\, take a stop by connectsafely.org and check out the newest apps for protecting yourself and your children\, and follow up on the breaking news about internet security.

SUMMARY:National Send a Card to a Friend Day
DESCRIPTION:We all have different types of friends. Some are like family and some are more aptly described as acquaintances. No matter how we describe them\, they each play a role in our lives. We can recall with clear vision our good and bad moments with each of them. \n\n\n\nNational Send a Card to a Friend Day is your chance to tell them exactly what they mean to you and why. This is not about a phone call or an email. This is a day to send a card… in the mail! Yes\, there still is a person who delivers physical letters and cards! They come down your block every day…check it out! \n\n\n\nHistory of National Send a Card to a Friend Day\n\n\n\nSince our days have become filled with every kind of electronic communication that you could dream of\, the art of penmanship and letter writing has begun to fade into a memory. Don’t think so? Ask a school aged child if they had penmanship today and see how hard they laugh at you! It just doesn’t exist anymore. This sad state of affairs raises the delight that one feels when having the fortune to be the recipient of an honest to goodness paper card! No pixels here\, just your heartfelt thoughts put down on paper. \n\n\n\nThere was a time when men and women wrote daily notes to their friends. There were thank you notes\, party invitations\, love notes and of course the gossip filled notes catching up on the previous evenings antics! Now we have a minute to minute digital journal on social media! So National Send a Card to a Friend Day is all about stepping away from the devices and show someone how much they mean to you. \n\n\n\nHow to celebrate National Send a Card to a Friend Day\n\n\n\nThis is a fun holiday to celebrate! There are so many options. Just head to your favorite store and wander down the aisle with the cards. You could spend hours there! Do you want a funny card or something more serious? The cards will be organized so that it is easy to go right to the type you are looking for. Feeling a little more creative? You could make a card from scratch! Pull out your paper and markers and get to it? Does that feel too silly for you? It shouldn’t. Just head to your favorite craft store and you will find boat loads of inspiration! Don’t forget to pick up some glitter while you are there\, because what is a handmade card without some glitter! \n\n\n\nIs making a card with glue and glitter just a little too creative for you? Alright\, I’ll let you know how you can use your computer or device. There are some programs out there that will help you to create a card to show just how much you care. You can have it printed at your local drugstore or on your own printer. Just make sure you write something personal to your friend in your own handwriting so that it will be the ultimate surprise on National Send a Card to a Friend Day!

SUMMARY:National Pizza Day
DESCRIPTION:National Pizza Day is the perfect time to get that pizza eating game on! \n\n\n\nYes\, it’s absolutely true! A whole day – 24 happy and delicious hours – devoted especially to celebrating that yummy carb that almost no one can do without. From the humble beginning of sauce on flatbread to today’s gourmet offerings\, pizza has captured the hearts and stomachs of people from all around the globe. \n\n\n\nEnjoying the basic Italian Margherita pizza? Love the traditional American cheese and pepperoni? Feeling more adventurous and need to show that in a unique selection of pizza toppings? Now is the time to show the world what pizza eating really is! \n\n\n\nWho is a pepperoni type of person? Or\, who prefers their pizza plain – with just cheese and tomato only? Perhaps there is someone who likes to experiment with different\, more unique toppings? \n\n\n\nThere are many disputes about the best pizza\, with the main argument being whether pineapple belongs on a pizza or not. No matter each person’s preference\, though\, there’s one thing pretty much everyone can agree on: pizza is one of the best culinary inventions around. \n\n\n\nAside from figuring out what toppings to have on pizza\, it is also necessary to make the decision about what type of crust to go for. There are also thick and thin crusts\, as well as pizzas with stuffed crusts. The options are practically endless! \n\n\n\nNow is the time to learn a little bit more about National Pizza Day. \n\n\n\nHistory of National Pizza Day\n\n\n\nWhile it’s impossible to know for sure\, some people might say that National Pizza Day got its beginning in the 10th century in Naples\, Italy. This is when records first show the presence of what has now become modern-day pizza. It started out as a simple flatbread spread with sauce and sprinkled with cheese. It is likely that the first people who made this as a creative snack for their families had no idea the sensation that they had whipped up and what it would become. \n\n\n\nPizza eventually made its mark on America in 1905. In New York City\, a pizzeria called Lombardi’s created the spark that would light hearts across the country from then until now – and with no conceivable end in sight. And 1905 was the year that Lombardi’s was granted the first mercantile license to make pizza issued in the United States. Amazingly\, Lombardi’s is still in business! For those who want to taste that first real pizza to hit American shores\, head over to Little Italy in Manhattan and check them out. \n\n\n\nIt is estimated that the first National Pizza Day probably began some time in the early 2000s\, but whenever it started\, it now deserves to be celebrated each and every year!

SUMMARY:National Self Love Day
DESCRIPTION:Ladies and gents\, every year\, before it’s time to lavish that significant other in your life with all sorts of love\, there is a day set aside to first step back and prepare by focusing as much attention on yourself. \n\n\n\nYes\, you deserve every bit as much of your love as does the object of your affections. \n\n\n\nThat is the concept behind Self Love Day\, held on February 13th\, the day before Valentine’s Day. \n\n\n\nHistory of Self Love Day\n\n\n\nSelf Love Day was founded in 2008 by Californian self-help guru Christine Arylo\, author of the book\, Madly In Love With ME: The Daring Adventure To Becoming Your Own Best Friend. \n\n\n\nThe philosophy is that to truly be able to show love to others\, a person must first be empowered to love herself without apology. And while the book may be specifically geared toward women\, there’s certainly no reason to discriminate because this concept can apply to all humans! \n\n\n\nAlso sometimes referred to as Madly in Love with Me Day\, this day offers a time that is dedicated to throwing away those diet books\, treating yourself to your favorite lunch in the company of people you know love and making a habit of respecting yourself just as you are today – and every day. \n\n\n\nHow to Celebrate Self Love Day\n\n\n\nConsidering some different ways that you might want to enjoy and celebrate on Self Love Day? Check out some of these interesting ideas: \n\n\n\nFall Madly In Love With Yourself\n\n\n\nOne of the best ways to celebrate Self Love Day is to begin practicing habits that will help you become the best version of you\, for you (and not to please someone else). Take some time especially on this day to practice some self-love and set aside time to do some of the things that you really love to do. Even if it’s just a 30 minute bubble bath with headphones and a favorite novel to block out the world for a little while\, or if it’s heading to the spa for an entire day of pampering. The point is that you take just a little bit of “me” time. \n\n\n\nRead the Book by Christine Arylo\n\n\n\nOne superb way to get on board with observing this day might be to read the book that inspired it all. Namely\, Madly In Love With ME: The Daring Adventure To Becoming Your Own Best Friend\, which was written by the founder of the day\, Christine Arylo. This book provides a variety of reasons why it is necessary to love yourself before you can love others\, and here are some of the highlights of the book: \n\n\n\nGo for your dreams with conviction and courage.Choose the situations and relationships that you find are the most encouraging and make you the happiest.Shower yourself with loving words rather than criticism or comparison.Discover and explore your deepest desires and thoughts and then learn how to act on them and make them happen.\n\n\n\nCheck Out More Self Love Resources\n\n\n\nThose who aren’t accustomed to such types of self-love should certainly not shy away from it on Self Love Day! Even if it feels uncomfortable or like a new practice\, it’s something that can be learned and it’s a super way to grow. \n\n\n\nOne particularly resource that is effective for learning how to practice self-love might be the website attached to the day\, called The Path of Self Love. This page offers a number of different resources including access to self-love workshops\, training\, books\, coaching\, assessments and so much more. There’s even a free Self Love Kit that can be accessed through the website. So especially on Self Love Day\, and on other days too\, be sure to prioritize and practice times of taking care of yourself to make a happier\, healthier and more whole you!

SUMMARY:Valentine's Day
DESCRIPTION:Love and romance. Candy and flowers. Cards and gifts. Dinner and dancing. \n\n\n\nValentine’s Day comes along with a whole host of plans and accoutrements that are meant to all boil down to one thing: Love. And it all comes in the name of one man\, St. Valentine\, who was an interesting (and perhaps slightly misunderstood) character in history. \n\n\n\nIt’s time to learn about and celebrate Valentine’s Day! \n\n\n\nHistory of Valentine’s Day\n\n\n\nWhile some people believe that the history of this day is pretty clear\, the reality is that the story behind St. Valentine’s Day is covered in a great deal of mystery. Tradition hails February 14 (and perhaps even the whole month of February!) as a time for love and romance\, with both ancient Roman and Christian backgrounds. \n\n\n\nBut when the life of St. Valentine\, the patron saint of this day\, is considered\, that’s when things tend to get a bit more murky. Some people don’t realize that the Catholic church actually has record of three of its own saints who went by the name of Valentine (or Valentinus) and all three died as martyrs. \n\n\n\nValentine’s Day Timeline\n\n\n\n 270 AD\n\n\n\nSt. Valentine is martyred\n\n\n\nDefying anti-marriage instructions given by Emperor Claudius II in order to build up the army\, Valentine secretly supports and marries young couples which eventually leads to him being put to death. His death is said to have taken place on February 14.[1] \n\n\n\n 496 AD\n\n\n\nFirst Valentine’s Day is recognized\n\n\n\nPope Gelasius decides to get rid of the Feast of Lupercalia\, a pagan festival of love\, and chooses to replace it with a celebration in honor of St. Valentine\, who was martyred a couple hundred years prior.[2] \n\n\n\n 1382\n\n\n\nChaucer’s Poem\, Parlement of Foules\, is written\n\n\n\nThis poem contains the first known literature reference connecting romantic love with Valentine’s Day. In the text of the poem\, Chaucer writes of birds who would pair off with a mate\, but some people refute the idea that it is connected to Valentine’s Day because February is too early and cold for birds to be mating.[3] \n\n\n\n 1700\n\n\n\nAmericans begin exchanging Valentines\n\n\n\nDuring this century\, the inspiration for romance and love on Valentine’s Day turns into the specific gesture of exchanging notes\, poems and love letters which may have been delivered by hand or by the US Postal Service.[4] \n\n\n\n 2010\n\n\n\nValentine’s Day is released in theaters\n\n\n\nThis romantic comedy has a star-studded cast with big names like Julia Roberts\, Bradley Cooper and even Kathy Bates\, and tells the story of several different romances between couples that happen all in one day. However\, at the box office\, the film doesn’t really get the greatest reviews from critics.[5] \n\n\n\nValentine Promotes Marriage\n\n\n\nPerhaps the most commonly held tradition around St. Valentine is related to the year 270 AD when Claudius II was the emperor of Rome. Known as “Claudius the Cruel”\, the emperor who wanted to build a strong army but was having trouble because of the attachment the men had to their wives and families. His solution? Just ban engagement and marriage\, of course! \n\n\n\nThe story goes that Valentine\, a priest in Rome\, disagreed with the decree from Claudius and decided to go ahead and perform marriages anyway\, allowing young lovers to marry each other in secret. When discovered\, Claudius ordered the public beating and beheading of Valentine\, which took place on February 14. The church later honored him by naming him as a saint. \n\n\n\nThis same Valentine is rumored to have become friends with the daughter of his jailer. He is said to have left her a note signed\, “From Your Valentine”. This may explain the idea of asking someone “Will You Be My Valentine?”. \n\n\n\nLess common are the other two saints also called Valentine\, one who was a bishop in what is now Terni\, Italy\, and another who was martyred in a Roman province of Africa. \n\n\n\nFeast of Lupercalia\n\n\n\nIt’s possible that even before Valentine\, the priest\, was martyred on February 14\, the Feast of Lupercalia\, a pagan feast of love\, was celebrated around the same time. One tradition that went along with this festival is that the names of women were put into a box and drawn out by the men that they would be matched up with\, letting chance (or fate!) take the lead. \n\n\n\nBy 496 AD\, Pope Gelasius was tired of such pagan celebrations\, so he declared that the Feast of Lupercalia would be canceled and\, instead\, St. Valentine’s Day would be celebrated on February 14. As time passed\, this day became one where lovers would exchange poems\, cards\, notes and flowers\, singing songs and performing other romantic gestures. \n\n\n\nHow to Celebrate Valentine’s Day\n\n\n\nCelebrating Valentine’s Day comes with all sorts of inherited romantic traditions which can certainly be fun and bring lots of joy! But this is also a great way to get creative with showing people how much they are loved–even if it isn’t a romantic relationship. \n\n\n\nTry out some of these ideas for celebrating Valentine’s Day: \n\n\n\nMake a Card or Gift for Someone\n\n\n\nWhether it’s a romantic partner or just a friend\, Valentine’s Day is a great day to say “I Love You”. Hand made cards and gifts are especially welcome when it comes to showing someone how much they are cared for. January is a dark and quiet month anyway\, so there’s plenty of time to prepare homemade gifts from a hobby like knitting a scarf\, braiding a friendship bracelet\, embroidering a towel\, painting a picture or simply making a card. \n\n\n\nSend Roses for Valentine’s Day\n\n\n\nWith delivery services abounding in almost every town\, getting flowers delivered has never been easier! Choose to send red roses that stand for passion; yellow for friendship; pink for sweetness; peach for sincerity or gratefulness; white for purity or loyalty; ivory for perfection; and lavender for a crush (or love at first sight!). \n\n\n\nMake Dinner Reservations\n\n\n\nIt’s likely that a last minute idea for going out to dinner will result in ordering takeout to eat at home\, because restaurants are basically always full on Valentine’s Day. But\, think ahead (sometimes months ahead\, depending on the popularity of the restaurant) and make a reservation for two at a romantic place. \n\n\n\nEnjoy a Story About Love\n\n\n\nHead over to a local bookstore or library and browse the selection of novels or biographies that might feature stories about love. Or\, it might even be interesting to read a biography about the guys named Valentine! \n\n\n\nThose who don’t have as much time to read could put on their favorite drama or rom-com movie and see what hijinx the main characters get into. Try out some of these films about love to get started: \n\n\n\nValentine’s Day (2010). Okay\, maybe this one is obvious. And perhaps it’s not even a great film\, but it would be remiss to leave out this one with an all-star cast including Julia Roberts\, Bradley Cooper\, Jennifer Garner and Ashton Kutcher. The Notebook (2004). This quintessential romance by Nicholas Sparks can be read as a novel or watched in the film starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams.Pride and Prejudice (2005). This delightful take on the Jane Austen’s novel of the same name stars Keira Knightly\, Rosamund Pike and Matthew Macfayden.Think Like a Man (2012). Based on Steve Harvey’s book Act Like a Lady\, Think Like a Man\, this rom-com features Michael Ealy\, Regina Hall\, Kevin Hart and Meagan Good.\n\n\n\nGet Creative for Valentine’s Day\n\n\n\nThis day doesn’t have to be the same as it’s always been. In fact\, it’s a great day to try something new. Go on a mountain hike\, visit a museum together\, go whitewater rafting or learn how to play chess. Whatever would be fun and can be done in the spirit of love is the perfect activity for this day!

SUMMARY:Single Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:After a Christmas spent with elderly family members asking when they’re finally going to get married\, or at least find a boyfriend or girlfriend to bring home\, life does not get any easier for singles after Christmas\, either. No sooner have the Santa Claus and snowman decorations vanished from the shops than the shelves begin to burst with cuddly teddy bears\, heart-shaped balloons\, and boxes of cheap chocolates\, all in shades of nauseating neon pinks and reds. Yes\, Valentine’s Day has become one of the world’s most profitable occasions\, yet another marketing scheme that has hit pay dirt more than the original creators of the idea could have ever dreamed. \n\n\n\nIf you’re in a relationship Valentine’s day is bad enough\, what with all the additional pressure to be ‘romantic’\, if such rampant and blatant consumerism and commercialism can be considered romantic at all. The restaurants are all overpacked with couples trying too hard to impress each other\, and it seems every flower in the whole city has been bought out\, just so someone can say it’s pretty once and then throw it away. Hallmark holidays are called that for a reason. \n\n\n\nLearn about Singles Awareness Day \n\n\n\nSingle is no longer a lack of options – but a choice. A choice to refuse to let your life be defined by your relationship status but to live every day Happily and let your Ever After work itself out. \n\n\n\nMandy Hale \n\n\n\nSingles Awareness Day takes place on the day after Valentine’s Day. It is also commonly known as Singles Appreciation Day. It is designed as a day for single people to celebrate. After all\, those in relationships get to experience the joy of Valentine’s Day\, so why shouldn’t single people have a day for themselves as well? It is also a great day for recognizing other forms of love\, for example\, the love between family and friends\, as well as loving yourself. There are some people who celebrate this day because they dislike Valentine’s Day. You probably know a lot of people who think that Valentine’s Day is just a commercialized day so that the card shops and other stores can make money. You may even be one of these people yourself. If so\, Singles Awareness Day is probably the sort of day you would very much enjoy. \n\n\n\nOn this day\, single people will often get together in honor of their single status. Whether your love being single or you’re not so happy about it\, Single Awareness Day is important because everyone can take a moment to realize that you do not need to be in a relationship in order to have a happy life. \n\n\n\nThere are many different events that take place on this date. This includes gathering with friends and family members\, as well as volunteering and traveling. In fact\, there are a lot of people who use this as an opportunity to take a trip to Brazil for the Carnival that takes place during this period. The main way to celebrate Singles Awareness Day\, though\, is to treat yourself. After all\, we all deserve a treat from time-to-time\, don’t we? That’s what this day is about. So\, if you have been wanting a certain pair of shoes for quite some time\, today is the day to purchase them! Or\, how about taking yourself out for a lovely meal? Treat yourself and appreciate how amazing you are. \n\n\n\nHistory of Valentine’s Day \n\n\n\nFor singles\, on the other hand\, Valentine’s day can be a simple and cruel reminder that they are alone. No pink stuffed animals for them\, and no tacky heart-shaped boxes of poor quality chocolate\, either\, though one does tend to wonder whether that really makes them worse off in the first place. \n\n\n\nSingles Awareness Day used to be an alternate name used for Valentine’s Day among those who found themselves unattached during the day\, but it all became too depressing. So by single’s hive-mind consensus\, it fell to the day after as a perfect antitode to all of the neon nonsense. \n\n\n\nHow to Celebrate Singles Awareness/Appreciation Day \n\n\n\nBeing single used to mean that nobody wanted you. Now it means you’re pretty sexy and you’re taking your time deciding how you want your life to be and who you want to spend it with. \n\n\n\nCarrie Bradshaw \n\n\n\nIt’s a humorous holiday to celebrate being single\, to share with single friends\, to send each other presents or even order yourself some flowers. On this day many people wear green\, as it is the complementary opposite of red. Another popular option is an absence of color (black)\, to symbolize an absence of celebration. One increasingly popular activity is to travel to Brazil and witness the Brazilian Carnival. \n\n\n\nThe trip\, coupled with the fact that Brazil doesn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14\, but in June\, provides a temporary getaway from the neon pink of the Valentine’s holiday in the Western culture\, by simply substituting it with another celebration. Some who celebrate Singles Awareness Day just want to remind romantic couples that they don’t need to be in a relationship to celebrate life\, and that the key to being happy is being able to be happy with yourself. \n\n\n\nContrary to popular misconceptions\, Singles Awareness Day is not about self-pity but rather a chance to announce to the world that you are single and happy to be so. Originally\, most singles referred to February 14 as Single’s Awareness Day (acronym: SAD) until it they realized that that was just depressing. \n\n\n\nChoosing the next day allowed single people a chance to turn this into a celebration rather than a festival of self-pity. There is no reason to be miserable that you are independent and unattached; on the contrary\, there are many more people in relationships than you might think who rather wish they were in your shoes\, with nobody to answer to but themselves. This is the day that all of the single people can proudly stand up and show that it is okay to be single. Take that\, cupid! \n\n\n\nIt is also important to make sure that all of your single friends and family members feel appreciated. You never know how someone is feeling. While some people embrace being single\, there are others who feel incredibly down about their single status. They may feel that no one wants them or that they are never going to be in a relationship. It is important to lift these people up and to let them know how incredible they are. Plus\, it always feels good to be nice to others and make them feel better about themselves\, doesn’t it?

SUMMARY:National Cancer Prevention Week
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, millions of people all over the world are diagnosed with cancer\, and millions more may die from cancer. And although a cure for various forms of cancer is still being pursued\, one of the biggest factors in today’s world is the actions that can be taken to prevent cancer from happening – or at least detecting it early.  \n\n\n\nSet some intention this year to participate in Cancer Prevention Action Week with activities that can be built into habits that will promote healthy lifestyles and possibly even prevent cancer! \n\n\n\nHistory of Cancer Prevention Action Week\n\n\n\nCancer Prevention Action Week got its start through the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) with the purpose of raising awareness and drawing attention to the things people can do to actively protect themselves and their families from cancer. Wearing sun block\, cutting out certain foods\, stopping using tobacco\, maintaining a healthy weight\, exercising regularly and many other activities are recommended by doctors to help actively prevent cancer from occurring. \n\n\n\nEach year\, Cancer Prevention Action Week is scheduled to take place during this month with the hopes that more individuals\, families\, and communities will take action and create new habits that may help to prevent cancer. One important part of this week is building into a foundation of education for folks who may not be aware of the fact that some of their habits or lifestyle choices may be leading them down an unhealthy path. \n\n\n\nExperts suggest that up to 40% of cancers may be preventable\, so make a difference during this time by celebrating and raising awareness about Cancer Prevention Action Week! \n\n\n\nHow to Celebrate Cancer Prevention Action Week\n\n\n\nShow some love to self\, family\, friends and the community by participating in and celebrating Cancer Prevention Action Week with some of these ideas: \n\n\n\nCut Back on Processed Meats\n\n\n\nOne of the largest ways to help prevent bowel cancer is to cut back on eating meats that have been processed. This includes deli meats\, sausages\, bacon\, and other meats that are over-processed. In honor of Cancer Prevention Action Week\, begin the habit of substituting these processed foods with fresh meats or plant-based protein products that can supply the needed nutrition without the high risk. \n\n\n\nStay Active\n\n\n\nA few different cancers can be connected with inactivity\, including colon cancer\, breast cancer\, and womb or endometrial cancer. This doesn’t mean it is necessary to start a high impact exercise routine\, but it’s more about just getting off the couch! In celebration of Cancer Prevention Action Week\, grab a friend and make a commitment to stay active with a brisk walk every day or some other fun activity that helps keep you moving. \n\n\n\nGet Cancer Screening Tests\n\n\n\nFrom getting moles looked at to having a regular mammogram\, cancer screening tests are an important part of being a healthy adult. Other cancers that can be screened for include colorectal cancer\, cervical cancer\, lung cancer\, prostate cancer and more. In honor of Cancer Prevention Action Week\, everyone can make an appointment with their general practitioner to find out what kind of cancers they need to be screened for\, related to their lifestyle\, gender\, family history and more.

SUMMARY:National Chili Day - Share Your Favorite Recipes
DESCRIPTION:Some like it hot\, some like it mild\, some like it on top of a baked potato and some prefer it with or without beans – but however it is most appreciated\, National Chili Day is the perfect excuse for millions of spicy food fans all around the world to chow down on a bowl of this delicious fiery favorite. \n\n\n\nHistory of National Chili Day\n\n\n\nThough many people believe chili originated purely in Mexico\, modern thinking suggests that it was probably truly created in Texas and is a blend of Native American\, Spanish\, and Mexican cuisines. This claim is supported by the fact that the first-ever written reference to chili occurred in the city of San Antonio\, Texas in 1828. This is just one of the many delicious varieties of food that fall into the category of Tex-Mex. \n\n\n\nHowever\, one legend dates chili back a little further\, stating that some immigrants who came from the Canary Islands brought the recipe with them to San Antonio when they settled there in the 1700s. This was before the name “chili” came to be and it was simply referred to as “Spanish stew”. \n\n\n\nEventually\, by the 1880s\, a popular way to eat the dish in San Antonio was by picking up a “bowl o’ red” at a chili stand in an open-air stall\, usually run by a “chili queen”. The popularity of chili began to spread throughout the US\, and it was given a huge boost when it was featured at the 1893 World’s Fair which took place in Chicago\, Illinois. \n\n\n\nThe dish that is now known as simply “chili” has\, in the past\, often been referred to as “chili con carne”\, which just means chili with meat. Of course\, today\, many people make it without meat\, and it can easily even be made into a vegan dish with no animal products of any kind. \n\n\n\nSome people do tend to spell it differently\, depending on where they are from. Most Americans will include only one “l” in the word\, while some British folks and people from other parts of the world may add an additional letter to spell it “chilli”. But no matter how it is spelled\, this is certainly a tasty dish that is worthy of celebration!

SUMMARY:National Tootsie Roll Day
DESCRIPTION:Tootsie Roll Day is here to show appreciation for and celebrate this marvelous little candy that has brought bits of joy and delight to children and adults of all ages for more than 125 years!  \n\n\n\nHistory of National Tootsie Roll Day\n\n\n\nThis deliciously tasty\, chocolatey chewy candy was the invention of Leo Hirschfield\, an American immigrant from Austria and son of a candy-maker. Hirschfield worked to create this candy that he ultimately named after his daughter\, Clara\, whose nickname was “Tootsie”. \n\n\n\nSold in Hirschfield’s candy store in Brooklyn\, New York\, the Tootsie Roll candies were originally hand wrapped and launched on February 23\, 1896. The candies sold for one penny each\, and the technique for making them was eventually patented in 1907. Though the company went through some difficult times in the first decades\, eventually the business turned into Tootsie Roll Industries and became one of the largest manufacturers of candy on the planet. \n\n\n\nDuring World War II\, because of their long shelf life and practicality for packing\, Tootsie Rolls were included in the ration boxes for every US soldier. The army considered them to be a form of quick energy and wouldn’t melt in the ration box like other chocolate candies would. \n\n\n\nTootsie Roll Day is here to show some love and appreciation for this delicious candy that has been a tiny joy for many generations! \n\n\n\nHow to Celebrate National Tootsie Roll Day\n\n\n\nShow some love to this little candy that has made a big impact and celebrate Tootsie Roll Day with some of these ideas: \n\n\n\nEnjoy Some Tootsie Rolls\n\n\n\nObviously\, the most important thing to be done in honor of Tootsie Roll Day is to head out to a nearby supermarket\, grocery store or candy shop and grab a bag of these round little candies. SUMMARY:National Play More Cards Day
DESCRIPTION:Cards get a bad rap sometimes—and true\, there are cards games that can be very addictive if not kept under control. But cards can also be the source of great entertainment for friends just who just want to hang out and spend some time together\, laughing an relaxing. \n\n\n\nPlaying friends for small sums of money can turn up the heat and makes things even more interesting. In general\, however\, playing cards s just fun\, and as with most fun things that relax us\, it’s typically a good idea to do more of them and let your brain take a break from the stress it’s used to for a change. This is where Play More Cards Day comes in. \n\n\n\nHistory of Play More Cards Day\n\n\n\nPlay More Cards Day was created in 2013 by Bicycle Cards\, the biggest producer of playing cards in the United States. The company began producing their cards in 1885\, and they have since had sizable roles in various important historical events. For example\, during World War II\, the deck was designed as a puzzle\, which when put together\, became a map. This map was supposed to help potential prisoners make their way to safety once they escaped. \n\n\n\nWars also prompted Bicycle Cards to create waterproof cards that would not peel\, rip or fall apart after coming into contact with water or moisture. During the Vietnam War\, the ace of spades printed on Bicycle Cards’ playing cards was thought to have severe psychological effects on the Viet Cong\, which viewed it as a symbol of death and infinite bad luck for their activities. \n\n\n\nInitially\, this rumor was false\, but as time went by and American soldiers continued to use Bicycle Cards’ ace of spades as their symbol\, it eventually did become a relevant part of Vietnam War psychological warfare symbolism. \n\n\n\nHow to celebrate Play More Cards Day\n\n\n\nThe simplest\, as well as the most fun way to celebrate this day\, is to\, in fact\, play more cards. Do you have a favorite card game? If not\, find out what you like best by trying out a few different card games. \n\n\n\nSome people find playing a card game in which you have no partner or team especially fun and challenging\, while others prefer the company of another teammate to help them out if they get in a fix\, like the Polish cards game Hola. If you’re a person who values peace and quiet above all other things\, playing solitaire with real cards as opposed to just clicking on them could prove entertaining. \n\n\n\nChoose whichever card game you want to play on this day\, the only requirement is that you have a good time. Another great way to make sure a party (even a small one) is a success is to have various foods to snack on. If you’re all to be touching cards\, it would probably be best of the snacks you choose was not too greasy so as not to dirty the cards. \n\n\n\nWith baked chips becoming all the more popular compared to regular deep-fried chips\, that could turn out to be a much easier criterion to meet than it seems. And if all else fails\, you and your friends can simply take a break from the game to fill up on something tasty\, and them go right back to what you were doing.

A gift from Chile in the 1700s\, garden strawberry plants made their way to North America in the 1750s. The plant is fairly easy to grow and doesn’t seem adverse to flourishing anywhere in the world. If you’d like your own homegrown strawberries this summer\, make sure your plant has full sun and sandy soil – and your dogs don’t eat off all the berries before you can pick a few. \n\n\n\nLearn about National Strawberry Day \n\n\n\nStrawberries! Fruit from the heart. \n\n\n\nAnthony T.Hincks \n\n\n\nNational Strawberry Day gives us the perfect opportunity to enjoy these sweet\, juicy berries. Not only are they delicious on their own\, but they can be elevated to new heights when incorporated into other dishes. A lot of people use strawberries when making desserts. There are many amazing treats to be made here. A simple option is to dip strawberries in melted chocolate; simple but divine! \n\n\n\nAs strawberry goes well with all types of chocolate – white\, milk\, and dark – it can be used in some many different desserts\, from strawberry and white chocolate cheesecakes to strawberry and dark chocolate tortes! The options are endless. There are also a lot of people that like to add strawberries to their salad. The fruit goes particularly well with balsamic vinegar and glaze. \n\n\n\nAn ingredient as versatile and delicious as this definitely deserves to be celebrated\, and that is what National Strawberry Day is all about. Not only do strawberries taste amazing\, but they also smell incredible as well. This is why a lot of people opt for strawberry scents to make their homes smell incredible. There are also many different varieties of strawberries. \n\n\n\nIn fact\, there are more than 600 varieties of this fruit. Pretty incredible\, right? You may want to spend some time doing a bit of research into strawberries on this day. You can learn more about the different strawberries that are available\, as well as finding out about their growing conditions. Why not have a try at growing your very own strawberries? After all\, they certainly taste more delicious when you have put your hard work into making them! \n\n\n\nHistory of National Strawberry Day \n\n\n\nNational Strawberry Day has been celebrated in the grocery industry since 2013. There are a number of establishments that may have been celebrating this day for longer\, however\, it really started to gain attention in 2013\, and since then it has been celebrated every year since. You may find that a lot of supermarkets and grocery stores have special offers running on strawberries on this day. Plus\, restaurants will often create a special strawberry dish and add it to the menu. \n\n\n\nHow to celebrate National Strawberry Day \n\n\n\nIf fresh strawberries aren’t at their best in your grocery store\, don’t forget the many accessible forms you can always get your hands on. Frozen and dried strawberries can help in a pinch if you’re creating in the kitchen. Strawberry preserves\, ice cream\, yogurt\, smoothies and milkshakes are nothing to shake a stick at either. \n\n\n\nBut if you are one of the lucky folks who stumbled on some great fresh strawberries\, you can whip up a strawberry pie\, shortcake or even a simple dish of strawberries and cream. We wish you a berry nice day\, and strawberry fields forever. \n\n\n\nOne of the best ways to celebrate National Strawberry Day is by getting out there and picking your own strawberries. There is bound to be a strawberry field not too far from you where you can go and pick your own strawberries. There are a few tips that you can use to ensure that this experience is as successful as possible. First of all\, strawberries do not continue to ripen if picked too early\, as is the case with pears or bananas\, so make sure you only pick berries that are fully ripe. \n\n\n\nOther tips include not washing your fruit until you are ready to eat\, as washing can speed up spoilage. You should also avoid overfilling your container\, although it can be very tempting. This is because strawberries can bruise easily\, as they are very tender. The best time to pick strawberries is on days that are cloudy and cool\, yet we recommend picking strawberries no matter the weather. \n\n\n\nStrawberries are also commonly used in scents and different beauty products\, with strawberry lip balm being a prime example. So\, why not treat yourself on National Strawberry Day? Natural lip balms are becoming increasingly popular\, as more and more people realise the benefits that are associated with choosing natural skincare products over commercial products that contain a cocktail of chemicals. However\, with so many natural lip balms to choose from it can be difficult to narrow down your search. \n\n\n\nThe first thing you should consider is the scent of the lip balm. You can get strawberry lip balms\, as well as strawberry combined with other flavors\, such as strawberry and mint. You do need to ensure that the fragrance comes from natural essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance oils though\, so make sure to check the ingredient list. In fact\, the ingredients are one of the most important aspects to consider when looking for natural lip balm. \n\n\n\nNot only do you need to ensure they are 100 per cent natural\, but that they offer many benefits to the lips. Beeswax\, for example\, is a must-have ingredient\, as it helps to protect the lips\, and it provides nourishment and locks in moisture. The final decision is whether to go for a lip balm tube or tin. You will get more lip balm in the latter\, but a lot of people prefer the hygienic nature and convenience of a tube.

SUMMARY:National Pink Day
DESCRIPTION:Bullying is a growing problem in the world today and\, every year\, people hear of more and more incidents coming up regarding bullying in schools everywhere. And\, although it is certainly a problem within schools\, bullying doesn’t stop there. It extends to the world outside of school and even into the virtual world of the internet\, where young people have created a bit of a world of their own. \n\n\n\nBullying is unpredictable and it doesn’t tend to follow any kind of rhyme or reason. It is merely the exertion of power over those who are weaker or who stand out as unusual. National Pink Day is a day dedicated to beating the bullies and breaking the cycle that creates and perpetuates this damaging behavior inside and outside of schools. \n\n\n\nHistory of National Pink Day\n\n\n\nNational Pink Day (also sometimes called Pink Shirt Day\, or Anti-Bullying Day) was established in 2007 in Nova Scotia\, Canada. It happened after a pair of students\, David Shepherd and Travis Price\, saw one of their fellow students at Central Kings Rural High School being bullied for no other reason than that student was wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school. Because of the association of pink with feminine things\, this 9th grade boy was harassed for choosing to wear the color. But his two classmates weren’t going to let the bullies win. \n\n\n\nIn a stroke of brilliance\, these two got together and decided to show support for the student and take a stand against bullying by getting everyone at their school to wear a pink shirt the next day. In fact\, the two boys were so committed that they went to a discount store and bought a bunch of pink shirts to pass out for anyone who didn’t already have one. Pink Shirt Day was created to stomp out all bullying and spread understanding\, and it’s a concept spreading throughout the world. \n\n\n\nWhat started in a small corner of Canada has become something of a world event. The day has also been associated with Anti-Bullying day\, another day when the idea is to stand up for others and wear pink. While the United Nations has made a declaration that this should happen on May 4\, people in many countries still celebrate in February. But\, that just means that there can be two different opportunities to make a difference and stand against bullying!

SUMMARY:Leap Year Day
DESCRIPTION:Feel like things are getting on top of you\, and you can’t keep up? Don’t worry – Leap Year Day is a free day that only comes around once every four years! Use it to catch up\, slow down\, and prepare yourself for another four years of hectic madness… \n\n\n\nHistory of Leap Year Day\n\n\n\nWhile most people would typically say that every year has just 365 days in it\, that isn’t exactly true. In fact\, it takes exactly 365 and one-fourth days for the earth to travel around the sun. This means\, in order for the years to be entirely accurate and precise\, it is necessary to have a “correction day” every four years\, where an extra day is added to account for the extra one-fourth of a day. \n\n\n\nThe history of calendars has been a bit complicated with the Roman calendar including only 355 days. Reform of the calendar during Caesar’s time led to adding a “leap day”\, but it was still a bit confusing. By the late 1500s\, the Gregorian calendar (initiated by Pope Gregory XIII) began its movement into the modern world\, and its practice of having an extra day every four years was slowly adopted and became common practice in the West over the next two centuries. \n\n\n\nBut Leap Year Day is more than just an extra day on the calendar at the end of February. In fact\, the day comes with a variety of interesting practices and customs\, as well as some superstitions that include bad luck. For instance\, in Greece\, a superstition holds that marriages that take place in a leap year will end badly. \n\n\n\nFor instance\, the tradition of a woman being able to propose to a man on Leap Year Day can trace its roots back to Irish folklore. In Scotland\, women who intended to propose were encouraged to wear a red petticoat on the day. And a man who refused a proposal from a woman on Leap Year Day may have been subject to a fine that ranged anywhere from one pound to a silk gown! \n\n\n\nHow to Celebrate Leap Year Day\n\n\n\nGet creative and have fun by celebrating Leap Year Day in a myriad of ways\, including some of these: \n\n\n\nMake a Proposal\n\n\n\nWhile in the 21st century\, it’s certainly acceptable for a woman to propose to a man any time she wants\, women who feel attached to this tradition or the Irish culture may want to participate on Leap Year Day. It’s a fun and exciting way to give a nod to this interesting bit of folklore and also offers a delightful story to tell the children and grandchildren someday! \n\n\n\nWatch the Movie Leap Year\n\n\n\nOne fun and entertaining way to celebrate Leap Year Day might be to pop some popcorn and enjoy the delightful romantic comedy that tells one couple’s story of the intention to propose on this day. Amy Adams and Matthew Goode offer a laughable time with adventures and an unexpected love story in the movie\, Leap Year\, originally released in 2010. \n\n\n\nCelebrate Leap Year Day with Kids\n\n\n\nKids can have loads of fun coming up with creative ideas for celebrating Leap Year Day all around the theme of “leaping”. Make crafts and decorate with frog-themed items\, play leap-frog\, jump on a trampoline\, and more. Older kids might like to make a time capsule that can be opened on the next leap day in four years.
