SUMMARY:May 2-New Month\, New Goals
DESCRIPTION:nstead of focusing on what you’re not getting done\, take the time to think about what you really want to achieve. After all\, goals represent things you want the most\, and the best way to make yourself happy is by making goals that are achievable. \n\n\n\nThe important thing to remember about setting and creating goals for yourself is having a plan of how you’re going to get there. Ask yourself\, how am I going to accomplish this goal? Having big resolutions and plans for yourself is a great thing\, but try to create small\, achievable objectives in between that will get you closer to reaching that goal. Make a small timeline of steps to complete that will get you closer to achieving your big goal. \n\n\n\nWhen you achieve your goals\, it can make you feel proud of yourself and boost your self-esteem. “Goals can do wonders for your mental health\,” says Rebecka Warren\, Clinic Manager at Centerstone\, “The hope is that they can add more happiness in your life and alleviate whatever struggles you might be going through during this time of year.” Some of the benefits to completing goals are to provide a sense of direction\, help keep you accountable\, and shed light on a sense of self. \n\n\n\nWhen you are setting goals for yourself\, it is important to know yourself and your limitations. If you fail to consider aspects that are detrimental to completing your goals\, then you might be setting yourself up to fail. In order to help you in the journey to achieving happiness through healthy goal setting\, here are some tips to help: \n\n\n\n\nKnow yourself. “Be honest about your ability to do something. If you know that in the past you haven’t been good at something—be realistic in your goal\,” says Warren. Avoid having daily goals for things that you haven’t done before\, and start small. Try to work your way up to something rather than expecting perfection immediately.\n\n\n\nSmall objectives. Take a look at what you’ve got around you\, and start by making smaller changes in your lifestyle. Instead of extreme elimination or extreme activity\, try to slowly offer yourself options and alternatives. “Broad goals need to be focused on. Try to integrate something you can do in your daily life to help you achieve your goals\,” says Warren.\n\n\n\nAccountability team. People like to feel supported by their friends and family\, and it often encourages them to succeed. Try to find a trusted individual to help offer you support and hold you accountable in your journey to achieving these goals. Having an accountability partner is the best way to measure your progress and stay on track.\n\n\n\nHealthy expectations. You only have so much control over your goals and the outcomes due to outside circumstances. Things such as moving\, birth and death\, and weather can disrupt your goals. Try to be accepting and forgiving to yourself\, and know that any progress is good progress. If you had a goal to do something five times a week and you only did it four times\, that’s still an achievement worth celebrating. Remember you can keep trying to build on those accomplishments!\n\n\n\n\nGoals aren’t meant to cause stress and worry\, so try to find something that will make you happy. You have the power to create happiness in the future.

SUMMARY:National Barrier Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Barrier Awareness Day is an annual observance that takes place on May 7 to encourage people to break down obstacles responsible for preventing the social integration of persons with disabilities. The day was initiated to dissolve stigmas keeping people with disabilities from advancing in education\, social life\, work\, and other spheres of life. The holiday was initiated by President Ronald Reagan who called upon fellow citizens to observe this day with appropriate programs and activities. \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL BARRIER AWARENESS DAY\n\n\n\n1.   Write to suggest possible policies\n\n\n\nTo observe National Barrier Awareness Day\, offer suggestions on things that could be made into a resolution or be suggested to Congress by your local congressperson. It is important to remember that things you noticed as a barrier affecting people with disabilities may not be as noticeable to others. \n\n\n\n2.   Volunteer to make a difference\n\n\n\nYou can also volunteer with your favorite N.G.O by making life easier for people with different forms of disability. These organizations sometimes need assistance in areas you may have expertise in\, like drafting proposals and memos to public officials or running advertisements on digital platforms on their behalf to reach a wider community. \n\n\n\n3.   Show support on social media\n\n\n\nOne way to observe or celebrate the day is to tweet your observations of the things you consider to be barriers affecting people with disabilities using the hashtag #NationalBarrierAwarenessDay. You may even tag popular influencers and celebrities you think would appreciate and amplify your efforts

SUMMARY:National Have a Coke Day and Give Someone a Cupcake Day
DESCRIPTION:Let’s celebrate both! \n\n\n\nWhether you enjoy Coke\, Diet Coke\, or a newer healthier alternative Coke Zero-it’s a great American past-time. \n\n\n\nBegun more than 125 years ago as a cocaine-fueled medicinal elixir\, Coke eventually morphed into the non-narcotic soda of choice for the baby-boomers who came of age in the 60s. As the company grew it added other flavors and varieties of the original coke. Today the Coca-Cola Company continues to be relevant as the largest soft drink company in the world\, expanding its uniquely American taste into the world’s largest emerging markets to become a global brand. That’s called “commercial diplomacy.” So\, when you start to hum and eventually sing the words you remember from Coke’s 1971 hit song\, know that people around the world are singing it along with you\, but in their own language. Do you know Coca Cola give students scholarship every year\, if not find out about it on scholaroo. How do you like to enjoy Coca Cola? \n\n\n\nNational Give Someone a Cupcake Day is celebrated every year on May 8 by Americans across the United States. On this day people give either bakery-bought or homemade cupcakes to their coworkers\, colleagues\, teachers\, bosses\, and anyone else they share their life with.

SUMMARY:National Buttermilk Biscuit Day - Share Your Recipes
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a buttermilk biscuit today\, add your favorite sides. Will it be jelly? Gravy? Honey? Enjoy! \n\n\n\n#ButtermilkBiscuitDay\n\n\n\nBiscuits are made using baking powder or baking soda as a leavening agent rather than yeast.  A typicalbuttermilk biscuit recipe contains flour\, baking powder\, baking soda\, salt\, butter\, and buttermilk.  They are often referred to as a “quick bread\,” indicating they do not need time to rise before baking. While being made\, the dough is beaten and folded to incorporate air\, which expands while baking\, causing the biscuit to rise. \n\n\n\nBefore the American Civil War\, biscuits emerged as an inexpensive addition to meals. This sturdier bread product soon became popular as people realized it absorbed the gravy on their plate better than plain bread. Soon a new family favorite\, biscuits\, and gravy\, was created. \n\n\n\nAlexander P. Ashbourne patented the first biscuit cutter in 1875. \n\n\n\nSupermarkets offer canned biscuits that are refrigerated until ready to be baked. In 1931\, Ballard and Ballard patented these refrigerator biscuits. \n\n\n\nBiscuits have been a staple of the Southern United States cuisine for many years and are often made with buttermilk.  Traditionally served as a side dish with butter\, they are also served at breakfast with molasses\, light sugarcane syrup\, maple syrup\, sorghum syrup\, honey\, jam\, or jelly\, or as a breakfast sandwich. \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE BUTTERMILK BISCUIT DAY\n\n\n\nShare your favorite recipes and biscuit combinations. Aside from biscuits and gravy\, give these biscuit ideas a try: \n\n\n\n\nMake biscuit breakfast sandwiches with eggs and cheese.\n\n\n\nServe biscuits with your favorite soup. It’s better than dumplings!\n\n\n\n\n\nUse biscuit dough to make pizza crust. Partially bake the dough before adding toppings.\n\n\n\nWarm biscuits with butter and jelly satisfy every time.\n\n\n\nServe biscuits with pork chops\, pork loins\, or pulled pork.\n\n\n\nBBQ and biscuits hit the spot\, too. They soak up the juices quite well.\n\n\n\nWhenever you have fresh fish\, serve homemade biscuits. Catfish and biscuits are particularly delicious.\n\n\n\nWho likes tomato sandwiches during the summer? When fresh tomatoes ripen on the vine\, slice them up while they’re warm. Add a little bit of mayonnaise and sprinkle of salt and sandwich them between two warm biscuits.\n\n\n\nDon’t forget dessert. Biscuits make an excellent base for strawberry shortcakes. Just add a little sugar to your dough to sweeten it. You’ll make up the rest of the sweetness with the strawberries and whipped cream.

SUMMARY:National Safety Dose Day - Understanding Medication Side Effects and Improving Medication Adherence
DESCRIPTION:National Safety Dose Day is observed annually every May 15. It aims to call attention to the importance of taking prescription medication responsibly to avoid health risks like addiction or even death. Many people see their doctor for drugs that give pain relief\, and about 20% of them will be prescribed an opioid or narcotic. Unfortunately\, opioids are being overprescribed. Adults who have been prescribed opioids by doctors become addicted or move on to more dangerous drugs like heroin. Opioid poisoning has now overtaken car crashes as the number one cause of accidental death in the United States. Between 1999 and 2019\, nearly 500\,000 people died of opioid overdose. \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL SAFETY DOSE DAY\n\n\n\n1.     Clean out your medicine cabinet\n\n\n\nDo an inventory of the contents of your medicine drawer or first aid kit. Replace old prescriptions with updated ones. Check the expiry dates and throw away expired medications. \n\n\n\n2.     Buy a pill organizer\n\n\n\nIf you have trouble remembering to take your daily medicine\, invest in a pill case with several compartments. You can store your scheduled doses of medications in one convenient place. \n\n\n\n3.     Start a healthy pill habit\n\n\n\nTalk to your doctor and find out what multivitamin or supplement you can take to improve your health and well-being. Form a routine of taking it and make sure it is the advised amount. \n\n\n\n5 NEGATIVE FACTS ABOUT PAINKILLERS\n\n\n\n1.       They don’t work well against long-term pain\n\n\n\nFor short-term usage to combat pain from surgery\, for example\, opioid medications work well. \n\n\n\n2.       Dangers of an old prescription or pills\n\n\n\nIf you took a high dose of pills in the past\, stopped\, then decided to take the same dose now\, you could accidentally overdose on your prescription. \n\n\n\n3.       Alcohol and painkillers are a dangerous combination\n\n\n\nBoth can make you feel drowsy and can render you doubly impaired. \n\n\n\n4.       They can be addictive\n\n\n\nMany people become dependent on prescription pain pills even if the drugs are negatively affecting them mentally or physically. \n\n\n\n5.       Short-acting drugs are safer\n\n\n\nThere’s no evidence that long-acting drugs are less addictive\, but they are more likely to cause an overdose even with recommended doses. \n\n\n\nWHY NATIONAL SAFETY DOSE DAY IS IMPORTANT\n\n\n\n1.     It encourages us to be mindful\n\n\n\nThere’s a pill for almost everything these days. We should still remember not to abuse these medicines and listen to our doctors to be safe. \n\n\n\n2.     It can break bad habits\n\n\n\nIf you’re the type who keeps and uses old prescriptions\, or worse\, tends to take a relative or a friend’s pills\, this is a day for turning over a new leaf. Break your bad habits\, starting today. \n\n\n\n3.     It creates awareness\n\n\n\nPeople can be addicted to pills without them realizing it. This day reminds us of the negative effects of abusing and misusing prescriptions.

It’s a holiday that encourages people to record their thoughts\, events\, and information in a notebook. It is especially important to have a notebook or journal if you are the type of person whose mind goes so many places at once. One of the reasons why keeping track of your ideas is beneficial is that it helps to focus the mind. People will often revisit their journal entries when they need inspiration or ideas. \n\n\n\nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL NOTEBOOK DAY\n\n\n\n1.   It promotes creativity\n\n\n\nNational Notebook Day is dedicated to preserving the art of handwriting and notebook making while promoting creativity and self-expression through writing by hand. SUMMARY:Inspirational Movies
DESCRIPTION:Let’s talk movies and popcorn? What’s your favorite inspirational movie. A movie that may surprise you that many therapist have been raving about is none other than “Inside Out”. You may be surprised as it is an animated film. But if you have a chance to watch it\, I think all ages would enjoy. The bottom line: Inside Outenthusiastically reminds us that sadness and pain are an essential part of living a full life\, and it does so with more nuance and grace than most live-action prestige dramas aimed solely at grownups.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:Memorial Day is observed in America on the last Monday of May\, and it is a day to commemorate and remember the men and women who lost their lives while in service for the US military. It is a federal holiday\, and as such\, businesses and schools are closed\, and most people have the day off work. \n\n\n\nIt officially became a federal holiday in 1971. Traditionally\, people will visit cemeteries and memorials for American soldiers\, and there are several parades around the country. \n\n\n\nHistory of Memorial Day\n\n\n\nThe Origins\n\n\n\nIt is unclear where Memorial Day was first observed\, but it was created after the end of the Civil War\, in 1865. At the time\, the American Civil War was the event that had taken the most lives in U.S. history\, it is estimated that around 620\,000 soldiers died. Following the war\, in the late 1860s\, people began organizing tributes to the lost soldiers by decorating the graves of soldiers on both sides of the conflict.  \n\n\n\nDecoration Day\n\n\n\nThe day was not originally called Memorial Day but was known as Decoration Day. On May 5th\, 1868\, General John A. Logan\, alongside a group of Northern Civil War Veterans\, pushed for a national day of remembrance for the lost soldiers of the conflict. He chose the 30th of May for this purpose\, proclaiming that people should show respect by decorating the graves of the dead\, so it was called Decoration Day. The 30th of May was chosen to honor this day\, as it was a date on which flowers would likely be in bloom across the whole country.  \n\n\n\nThe first time that this day was celebrated\, a total of 5\,000 participants decorated the graves of 20\,000 soldiers.  \n\n\n\nAll Northern States followed this tradition\, and by 1890 it was a state holiday in those states. However\, Southern States did not acknowledge Decoration Day until after World War I\, when the day became a day of remembrance for all of those who sacrificed their lives for the country in conflicts\, and not just those fallen during the Civil War.  \n\n\n\nWhile it is unknown where Memorial Day started\, several independent communities and states likely put up their own memorials. However\, records show that the earliest commemoration of the fallen soldiers was held by recently freed slaves.  \n\n\n\nOfficially\, Waterloo\, New York is known as “The Birthplace of Memorial Day” as it was there that the first annual\, wide event was held on May 5th\, 1966.  \n\n\n\nHow Decoration Day became Memorial Day\n\n\n\nIn 1968 the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed by Congress. Memorial Day went from being celebrated on the 30th of May to being celebrated on the last Monday of May\, this gave American workers a three-day weekend. Many people now refer to the end of May as the Memorial Day Weekend\, this long weekend was made official in 1971 when Memorial Day was turned into a federal holiday. \n\n\n\nHow Memorial Day is celebrated\n\n\n\nA solemn occasion\n\n\n\nMemorial Day is a solemn occasion\, people commemorate this day by visiting cemeteries and memorials and laying wreaths and American flags on the graves of soldiers. Most also wear a Red Poppy\, which gained meaning as a symbol of remembrance by the World War I poem “In Flanders Fields”. During Memorial Day\, all American flags must be flown at half mast until noon\, after which they should be raised until sunset.  \n\n\n\nIn December of 2000 the National Moment of Remembrance was announced\, encouraging Americans to observe a moment of respect and silence at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day in honor of all who lost their lives in battle.  \n\n\n\nA celebration\n\n\n\nMemorial day is also a day of celebration\, as this day usually announces the arrival of Summer\, people also take the long weekend to travel\, throw parties and enjoy barbecues with friends and family.  \n\n\n\nThe biggest Memorial Day parade in the country takes place in Washington DC where over 200\,000 Americans turn up to watch the event. Notable parades also take place in Chicago and Little Neck-Douglaston (NY)\, but all over America there will be parades as Americans gather to watch\, remember\, and celebrate.
