SUMMARY:Simplify Your Life - How Organization Helps Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Why Getting Organized is Good for Your Mental Health\n\n\n\n\nHow to Celebrate Simplify Your Life Week\n\n\n\nMake your own world a little easier and freer by joining in with some of these ideas for Simplify Your Life Week: \n\n\n\nSimplify Your Possessions\n\n\n\nMarie Kondo may have been one of the most popular names in the organizing and simplifying spectrum lately\, but there are a number of other simplifying experts also. Many of these state that decluttering a person’s space allows them to de-clutter their minds as well. While the moment of cleaning out a closet or getting rid of junk may not feel good\, the freedom it can create is amazing. This may also include simplifying home decor by removing items that gather dust or take up mental space and going for clean lines and \n\n\n\nSimplify Your Schedule\n\n\n\nMany people live their lives with back to back meetings\, coffee dates\, play dates\, sporting events\, volunteer work and other commitments. And while some of these can be healthy\, too much can be overwhelming. Individuals and families can participate in Simplify Your Life Week by creating more margins and white space in their calendars and limiting the things they say “yes” to. \n\n\n\nSimplify Your Home Decor\n\n\n\nSimplify Your Life Week might include a project that allows for simplifying home decor. Start by removing items that gather dust (taking up time and mental space). Instead\, go for cleaner lines\, more blank walls and solid colors or simple patterns that soothe the soul. As stated by William Morris: “have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

SUMMARY:Farmers Appreciation Day
DESCRIPTION:Farmworker Appreciation Day celebrated on August 6th\, recognizes the hardworking individuals in the agricultural sector. \n\n\n\nIt’s a day filled with gratitude for those who work tirelessly to ensure our tables are never without fresh produce. \n\n\n\nThe significance of this day stems from acknowledging the immense contributions farmworkers make to society and the economy\, and it offers a moment to reflect on their critical role in food production. \n\n\n\nCelebrating this day can take various forms\, from visiting farmworkers and offering thanks in person to raising awareness on social media about their pivotal role and the hardships they endure. \n\n\n\nIt’s also a chance to support farmworkers directly\, perhaps by bringing them refreshments or protective clothing to ease their workday or by engaging with local farms and markets to understand the value of locally sourced food. \n\n\n\nThis appreciation day honors their hard work and encourages a deeper understanding and connection with the food we consume daily\, promoting a more sustainable and fair food system for all. \n\n\n\nSo\, on Farmworker Appreciation Day\, let’s take a moment to thank those who truly keep the world fed. \n\n\n\nEvery bit of appreciation counts\, whether through a kind word\, a supportive post\, or learning more about their work. After all\, without them\, dining tables everywhere would be a lot less colorful and a whole lot emptier. \n\n\n\nHistory of Farmworker Appreciation Day\n\n\n\nLet’s jump into the time machine and rewind to the origins of Farmworker Appreciation Day! Its history is as rich as the soil farmworkers tend daily. The story begins in the 1960s\, a time of big changes and louder voices. \n\n\n\nFarmworker Appreciation Day’s origins date back to the complex history of agricultural labor in the United States. \n\n\n\nIt particularly highlights the evolution of farm labor demographics and the significant contributions of immigrant workers. \n\n\n\nIt serves as a reminder of the challenges and conditions farmworkers face\, including exposure to pesticides and harsh working environments\, which underline the importance of advocating for their rights and well-being. \n\n\n\nTherefore\, in sunny California\, Filipino farmworkers decided enough was enough. They were tired of low pay and tough conditions. So\, they took a stand\, striking for better terms. This wasn’t a weekend picnic; it stretched over the years but sparked something bigger. \n\n\n\nThe United Farm Workers (UFW) union sprouted from these seeds of protest. Many unions and farming groups came together\, fighting for their rights and improving farm laborers’ lives. Fast forward to 1966\, and the UFW decided to honor their hard work. \n\n\n\nBut they didn’t settle on August 6th right away. Initially\, they chose a date in September to align with a feast day honoring farmers. Things took a presidential turn in 1994 when Bill Clinton made it official. And just like that\, August 6th was marked as Farmworker Appreciation Day on calendars across the nation. \n\n\n\nThis day isn’t just about looking back at struggles and strides. It’s a yearly reminder to say “thank you” to those who grow our food. \n\n\n\nFrom sunrise to sunset\, farmworkers are out there\, ensuring our meals are more than just dreams. Every August 6th\, we can acknowledge their sweat and sacrifice. \n\n\n\nSo next time you enjoy a crisp apple or a juicy tomato\, remember the hands that made it possible. Farmworker Appreciation Day celebrates those hands\, past\, present\, and future. \n\n\n\nHow to Celebrate Farmworker Appreciation Day\n\n\n\nHere are some fun and meaningful ways to celebrate Farmworker Appreciation Day: \n\n\n\nDrop by with a Thank You: Visit a local farm and bring snacks or drinks to the farmworkers. A small gesture can mean a lot. \n\n\n\nShare the Love Online: Use social media to spread awareness. A quick post can shine a big spotlight on their hard work. \n\n\n\nSupport Farmworker Rights: Learn about their challenges and advocate for better conditions. Your voice can help bring about change. \n\n\n\nDonate to Farmworker Charities: Look for organizations that support farmworkers and contribute what you can. \n\n\n\nBuy Local Produce: Shopping at farmers’ markets directly supports their hard work and strengthens the community. \n\n\n\nVolunteer Your Time: Find out if there are any local events or organizations where you can help support farmworkers. \n\n\n\nEducate Yourself and Others: Read up on the history and contributions of farmworkers. Then\, share what you’ve learned with friends and family. \n\n\n\nThese ideas combine appreciation with action\, ensuring farmworkers feel valued on this special day and every day.

SUMMARY:National Happiness Happens Day
DESCRIPTION:Smiles are contagious\, share yours’ with the world! \n\n\n\nSmile on August 8th to share in National Happiness Happens Day. On this day each year just let it happen. You know.  Happiness.  Because happiness happens.  \n\n\n\n#HappinessHappensDay\n\n\n\nThe day encourages happiness all day. Recognize every moment of glee\, joy\, delight\, and pleasure. Don’t let it pass. Most importantly\, a flicker of a giggle should be given its due\, and should it blossom into full-blown happiness\, don’t be surprised. It happens! \n\n\n\nAnother element of the day prohibits the squashing of other people’s happiness. From time to time\, we might find other’s happiness might seem irritating. Those moments happen when we have particularly rotten days. However\, our bad days don’t give us the right to squash another person’s joy. Instead\, allow their delight in the day to infect us. Perhaps\, their ability to smile will blow the storm clouds away from your day.   \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL HAPPINESS HAPPENS DAY\n\n\n\nShare your happiness and seek ways to infuse happiness in your life. Make it happen! Use #HappinessHappensDay to post on social media and let others know to do the same.

SUMMARY:National Book Lover's Day
DESCRIPTION:Reading can be a healthy coping skill and hobby.   \n\n\n\n\nhttps://namica.org/blog/why-reading-is-good-for-mental-health/\n\n\n\n\nFrom the scent of a rare first edition book found in an old time book collection\, to a crisp\, fresh book at the local supermarket\, the very sight of a book can bring back delightful memories. \n\n\n\nReading as a child\, enjoying the short stories\, the long books and the ability to lose yourself in a story so powerful that at the end you are asking yourself where to get the next book in the series. This day is for the reader in all of us\, the celebration of National Book Lovers Day! \n\n\n\nHistory of National Book Lovers Day\n\n\n\nWhile the day’s origins may be shrouded in mystery and rumor\, the books themselves are not. Starting from carving on stone tablets thousands of years ago\, the book was designed to make the writings and drawings portable for those that could not be carried around on stone tablets. Originally these written documents were made on parchment or vellum (calf skin\, in case there’s some question) that was then bound tightly with a wooden cover. \n\n\n\nOften the wooden cover was tightly wrapped in leather to prevent the wood from getting wet and had clasps or straps to hold it shut. In Eastern cultures\, carved wooden blocks were used with ink to print out texts on cloth\, as early as 220 AD. \n\n\n\nIn the more modern age\, printing capabilities made books cheaper\, and easier\, to print. The printing press was invented in Germany in 1436 by Johannes Gutenberg with the original intention of printing Bibles. Of course\, the printing press\, the typewriter\, and the computer all had an impact on the way that books were created\, produced\, marketed and sold. \n\n\n\nBut even more in recent years is the upsurge in electronic devices that can be used as places to read. Computers\, tablets\, and even most cell phones now have the ability for the user to read books\, making it that much easier to carry around a small library to enjoy no matter where a person finds themselves.

SUMMARY:International Left-Handers Day
DESCRIPTION:From scissors to knives\, from can openers to cork screws\, Left Handers (also sometimes called Southpaws) can be the brunt of jokes all year long due to their unique hand dominance. \n\n\n\nBut this is the day to ignore all of that and bring awareness to all of those right handed folks around the globe in celebration of Left Handers Day. After all\, as the old saying goes– right handed people operate on the left side of the brain\, which means that left handed people are functioning on the right side. Therefore\, only left handed people are in their right mind! \n\n\n\nIt’s time to take a look at Left Handers Day! \n\n\n\nHistory of Left Handers Day\n\n\n\nCelebrating its first year of existence in 1976\, the Lefthanders International organization helped raise awareness to the myriad of difficulties that can be faced by people who are left handed. \n\n\n\nBeing accused of witchcraft in the 1600s for just using one hand more than the other\, was only the beginning! Since only 10 percent of the population is left handed\, various items made especially for those who are left-handed are typically more expensive than their right handed counterparts. \n\n\n\nObjects such as scissors\, knives and even school desks can see a mark up of almost 75 percent more for left handed individuals! Even sports fanatics will pay out the nose\, as golf clubs sometimes see as much as a 200 percent increase depending on their brand. \n\n\n\nBut even though it can be difficult and\, admittedly\, a bit more expensive\, those left handers in the world are certainly unique and interesting people. And this is the perfect day to celebrate them! \n\n\n\nHow to Celebrate Left Handers Day\n\n\n\nCelebrating Left Handers Day is a fun and simple way to acknowledge the unique position of those whose dominant hand is their left. Try celebrating in these ways: \n\n\n\nBrag About Being Left Handed\n\n\n\nFor those who are left handed\, today is the day to celebrate and enjoy! Wear a left-handers t-shirt or make a proud post on social media. Embrace this special quality and show that pride in being left handed! \n\n\n\nAppreciate a Left Handed Person\n\n\n\nThose who aren’t left handed can contact those friends and family members who are left handed and give them a congratulatory hug for the struggles they have faced in their lifetimes! Tell them how interesting they are and how much they are appreciated for their contributions to the world. Take them to lunch or coffee and offer to try eating with the opposite hand to see what it’s like. \n\n\n\nTry “Walking a Mile In Their Shoes”\n\n\n\nOkay\, well maybe their shoes would be the same. But how about their scissors\, or knives or guitars or computer mouse? Take some time to feel the pain of a left hander living in a right handed world by sharing in their difficulties. This can be done easily enough by asking them to borrow their left handed scissors and then using them with the right hand! Just the discomfort alone tends to be enough to bring people around to understanding. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, learning to throw a ball or write on a desk designed for a right handed person is difficult for a Southpaw\, so why not swap the table on them and sit them at a left handed student desk to write some things down with their right hand? \n\n\n\nIntroduce individuals to the inherent difficulties of using a left handed paring knife in their right hand. Or show them how coffee mugs are made with the picture and writing so one would have to use the cup in the right hand in order to make use of it as it was intended. Take a look at a computer mouse–which is intended for a right handed person–and see how difficult it becomes without knowing how to swap it to the left handed mode. \n\n\n\nTell Some Left Handed Jokes\n\n\n\nBut whatever is done\, don’t forget the fun jokes and fun facts surrounding the idea that left handed people are better (or at least more unique!) than right handed people. \n\n\n\nFor instance\, remind those nearby that everyone is born right handed\, but only the greatest overcome it! Or tell a friend that it is believed that octopuses only have one right hand. Or that polar bears are believed to be primarily left handed.

DESCRIPTION:https://www.webmd.com/mental-health/how-does-humor-affect-mental-health \n\n\n\nBringing smiles with witty punchlines and hilarious anecdotes\, telling a good joke is a delightful art that turns ordinary moments into bursts of laughter and camaraderie. \n\n\n\nWhy did the chicken cross the road? What is black and white and red all over? Knock knock? These jokes\, and many more and given during a day of the year. I am not talking about April Fool’s Day and the pranks that accompany that day\, but this for the comedy and wordplay of Tell a Joke Day! \n\n\n\nLearn about National Tell A Joke Day\n\n\n\nNational Tell A Joke Day is the perfect idea to share some laughs with all of your loved ones! After all\, laughter is good for the soul. It is good for your health. The world would be a better place if we all laughed more\, right? In fact\, there are a lot of benefits that are associated with laughter. \n\n\n\nLaughter can improve cardiac health\, work your abs\, reduce your stress hormone levels\, and lower your blood pressure! Laughter can also create a general sense of well-being\, trigger the release of endorphins\, and boost T-cells. This day will be filled with a lot of laughter and a lot of smiles\, from morning until evening. It sounds like a pretty good day for us! \n\n\n\nJokes consist of funny stories that are either verbal or written. They typically end with a punchline. While slapstick comedy tends to include props and sometimes small stunts\, jokes are typically best when they are short. They contain a well-delivered punchline and a little bit of misdirection\, so the person listening doesn’t anticipate the punchline. The more you tell jokes\, the better you will become\, and the happier you will be. \n\n\n\nThere are so many reasons to love National Tell A Joke Day! SUMMARY:National Potato Day
DESCRIPTION:Ah\, spuds. On August 19th each year\, the humble potato takes center stage. In truth\, though\, doesn’t it steal the show at nearly every meal? \n\n\n\n#NationalPotatoDay\n\n\n\nWhether baked\, fried or mashed\, these taters bring on the flavor. They are a staple of many meals\, too. Filling a void for appetizer dishes and working double duty at suppertime\, these versatile root veggies satisfy and fill us up. \n\n\n\nAccording to the International Potato Center\, more than 4\,000 varieties of potatoes grow around the world. Not only that\, but they also come in a variety of beautiful colors and sizes. This starchy carbohydrate comes with no fat or cholesterol and is loaded with Vitamin C and potassium. Depending on your dietary needs and how you prepare your potatoes\, this vegetable offers what many are looking for. However\, with 26 grams of carbohydrates\, it’s a no-no in a low-carb lifestyle. \n\n\n\nWhen it comes to the health specs of a potato\, we tend to tank the benefits when we prepare them. We fry them and load them with toppings like cheese\, sour cream\, and butter. Who doesn’t love a loaded baked potato? Ok\, ok. You can all put your hands down\, now.

SUMMARY:National Senior Citizen Day
DESCRIPTION:We are fortunate to live in a time when so many of our elderly are living lives of unexpected health and financial security\, but such was not always the case. Throughout history old age was not something an individual expected to reach\, and so we lost the wisdom and experience of these individuals at an early age. Senior Citizen Day celebrates the fact that these keepers of wisdom are staying with us longer each year\, and in better health. Learn about Senior Citizen Day\n\n\n\nYou have probably been told many times before that you need to respect your elders. In fact\, this is a phrase that most children hear throughout their lives! Well\, Senior Citizen Day is all about respecting your elders. It is about honoring those people who have been on this earth longer than we have. Getting old is not easy. You have been independent your whole life\, and then you feel this being stripped away from you. It can be very difficult to deal with\, and that is why we all need to make sure that we are there for our grandparents and older people in general. That’s what this day celebrates\, and it’s special to be a part of it. \n\n\n\nAfter all\, seniors bring so much to the world! They offer their experience\, their wisdom\, and their knowledge. Our elderly friends and family have a lifetime’s worth of incredible experiences and tales to share with us. For centuries\, cultures across the globe have looked to older people in the communities in order to provide them with knowledge and wisdom. In times of trouble or when we need some advice and direction\, we can always rely on older people to impart their great wisdom on us. \n\n\n\nHowever\, while our grandparents have us to turn to and rely on to keep those smiles on their faces\, it is important to recognize that there are a lot of seniors who are incredibly lonely. This is why it is important to pay tribute to all seniors on this day. There are a lot of charities out there that are designed to help combat loneliness in older people\, so why not give them some of your time? \n\n\n\nHow to celebrate Senior Citizen Day\n\n\n\nThere are organizations that help to support those senior citizens who are living on their own\, and they accept volunteers to work with them and help out the aging community. You can also stop by local adult care homes to visit those who may have seen their friends and family pass before them. If you have grandparents or other elderly still alive in your family\, celebrate Senior Citizen Day by stopping by and telling the how much you appreciate them. Sitting down and listening to the stories they have to tell can give you a unique perspective on the world and yourself. \n\n\n\nThis is also the perfect day for you to reach out to one of your senior family members. Whether it is a grandparent\, uncle\, aunt\, or parent\, you should give them a call and arrange to spend some time together. You could catch a movie together or enjoy afternoon tea. If they are not able to get out and about\, why not bring the film and the afternoon tea to them? After all\, what could be better than some tasty cakes and a catch up?

SUMMARY:National Be an Angel Day
DESCRIPTION:Other times\, days\, even weeks\, can be devastating. A loss\, illness\, or overwhelming news takes the wind from our sails. Those angels provide comfort at a time when we need it most. \n\n\n\nThe same happens to the people around us. We don’t always know what others may be enduring. We can be an angel in big and small ways. Whether we know a person’s concerns or not\, merely offering to join them for a meal may relieve their stress. Having someone to listen to often is something we need most. \n\n\n\nNoticing someone’s efforts is another way we can be an angel. Letting them know you’re impressed with their stamina\, talent\, progress – fill in the blanks. These positive comments provide morale-boosting energy. \n\n\n\nAny time we see someone in need\, the opportunity arises to offer help.  Assist an elderly neighbor with lawn care. Don’t overlook the single parents when setting up play dates. Their children – and the parents – need social interaction\, too. \n\n\n\nAlso\, when you value someone’s time\, effort\, and presence\, don’t hesitate to tell them. We may be individual people\, but we don’t thrive alone. Look out for each other. \n\n\n\nOn August 22nd\, National Be an Angel Day encourages good deeds and kindness to others. By supporting those in need and inspiring others to kindness\, we display an act of an angel here on earth. \n\n\n\n#BeAnAngelDay\n\n\n\nThe day also recognizes those who’ve been angels to us. Sometimes we have a terrible day. Whether its bad news or poor planning\, we all have them. A kind word\, a hug\, or even a pleasant atmosphere makes a difference.

SUMMARY:National Thoughtful Day
DESCRIPTION:August 28th brings with it an opportunity to demonstrate how we value each other. National Thoughtful Day sets aside a celebration meant to bring goodwill in a variety of ways. By serving the day with a spirit of generosity toward others\, a ripple effect takes place. \n\n\n\n#NationalThoughtfulDay\n\n\n\nWhat encompasses a thoughtful day? Sometimes it’s an awareness of fulfilling another’s needs. Whether they are celebrating something already or need a pick-me-up\, being aware generates a multitude of thoughts that result in thoughtful acts. It can be a small token or an inspirational word. Either way\, your thoughtfulness makes others feel special. \n\n\n\nAnd many times\, those special people in our lives will reciprocate in kind. While it is usually not expected when we’re being thoughtful\, it tends to happen anyway. \n\n\n\nBeing thoughtful also creates an interchange of thoughts and ideas that spur even more thoughtfulness. One simple act or word can generate new friendships\, cause a plan to develop or a garden to grow. Who knows where your thoughtfulness will lead! \n\n\n\nA thoughtful day also gives us perspective. We pause a moment to think of another and not ourselves. Our consideration for others brings kindness to the world that would otherwise be missing. \n\n\n\nAnd while all these reasons matter\, one of the most important reasons to celebrate National Thoughtful Day is that it is necessary. Imagine all the lives we touch and how a single thoughtful act can impact them for a lifetime. Thoughtfulness is a necessity we cannot live without.

SUMMARY:National Grief Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:On August 30\, National Grief Awareness Day recognizes the time it takes to heal from loss doesn’t have a prescribed course and is a reminder closure comes in many forms. When a loved one dies\, the void they leave affects everyone differently. \n\n\n\n#GriefAwarenessDay\n\n\n\nThroughout the day\, take stock of those in your life who have been affected by a form of loss. The death of a loved one\, a close friend or enduring an extreme change in their lifestyle can trigger grief. When we lose the stability of shelter\, a job or a routine we have known for years\, we suffer a type of loss that requires closure. Some adjust to these changes easily\, and others take time to become familiar with new routines. \n\n\n\nOffer to listen to a friend or ask them to join you for a coffee or tea. Send a message letting them know they are never far from your mind. Then\, set a date for another visit.  If you find you are suffering from grief\, know that it’s natural. You’re not alone\, and it’s okay to ask for help if you feel your grief is overwhelming. \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL GRIEF AWARENESS DAY\n\n\n\nLook for signs of grief in yourself and your loved ones. Self-care is vital after and during a loss. There’s no shame in seeking assistance with grief if the pain becomes overwhelming. \n\n\n\nVisitwww.change.orgto find out more\, sign the petition\, and use #GriefAwarenessDay to share on social media. \n\n\n\nNATIONAL GRIEF AWARENESS DAY HISTORY\n\n\n\nAngie Cartwright founded National Grief Awareness Day in 2014. Familiar with loss\, Cartwright too became lost in grief. She has become dedicated to bringing support to those who have suffered like her and enlightening others to the realities of bereavement. \n\n\n\nGrief Awareness FAQ\n\n\n\nQ. Does grief always involve death?A. No. Many circumstances may cause a person grief. We may grieve the loss of a job or income. Physical or mental trauma may cause us grief. We also experience grief when dramatic changes occur in our life – divorce\, a breakup\, empty nesting\, a health event\, or an unexpected discovery can all cause grief. \n\n\n\nQ. Does everyone experience grief the same?A. No. While many people will go through the same stages\, it may take one person longer to navigate one stage while another person experiences the stage quickly. \n\n\n\nQ. Does grief end?A. Grief lessens but it may never go away. Sometimes a memory or event will bring up feelings of grief long after death or trauma. Over time\, we become better equipped to deal with these moments.
