SUMMARY:Random Acts of Poetry Day
DESCRIPTION:Share your favorite poetry. \n\n\n\nRANDOM ACTS OF POETRY DAY\n\n\n\nRandom Acts of Poetry Day on the first Wednesday in October encourages outbursts of poetry. The day for poets and poet wannabes spreads random poetry through art\, the written word\, and voice. \n\n\n\nIt seems that since the beginning of time\, people throughout the world have been expressing themselves through poetry. Known for its distinctive style and rhythm\, this genre of literature offers a great way to express feelings and ideas. \n\n\n\nYou might think of poems as written with stanzas full of rhyming words. However\, there are different kinds of poems. 7 Popular Poetry Formats \n\n\n\n\nSonnet\n\n\n\nHaiku\n\n\n\nLimerick\n\n\n\nBallad\n\n\n\nEpitaph\n\n\n\nOde\n\n\n\nFree verse\n\n\n\nAlong with the different types of poems\, there are three main types of poetry. These include narrative\, dramatic\, and lyrical.\n\n\n\nEven if you aren’t into poetry\, you have probably heard these names: William Shakespeare\, Robert Frost\, Emily Dickinson\, Walt Whitman\, and Sylvia Plath. These are some of the most famous poets in history. Modern-day poets include Sam Sax\, Eve Ewing\, Andrew Feld\, and Sharon Olds.

SUMMARY:National Body Language Day - Nonverbal Communication
DESCRIPTION:National Body Language Day celebrates the powerful role of nonverbal communication in our daily lives. \n\n\n\nThis special day highlights how our gestures\, expressions\, and movements can convey thoughts and emotions without a single word. \n\n\n\nIt’s a reminder that understanding body language helps us connect more deeply with others\, making interactions smoother and more meaningful. \n\n\n\nThe day emphasizes the importance of recognizing and interpreting these unspoken signals. By paying attention to body language\, we can better understand not only other people but also animals. \n\n\n\nPets often communicate their needs and feelings through their actions\, and learning to read these signals can improve our relationships with them. This awareness extends beyond human interactions\, making it a universal form of communication. \n\n\n\nNational Body Language Day also aims to educate people about the nuances of nonverbal cues. Positive body language\, like open gestures and eye contact\, can foster trust and likability\, while negative signals might create misunderstandings. \n\n\n\nBy becoming more aware of these cues\, we can improve how we interact and present ourselves\, enhancing both personal and professional relationships.

SUMMARY:National Inner Beauty Day

It’s a call to focus on the qualities that make us special\, to embrace our uniqueness\, and to love ourselves unconditionally.

SUMMARY:Face Your Fears Day
DESCRIPTION:Take a moment to consider what your life might be like if you conquered some of your greatest fears. What would you do differently? National Face Your Fears Day gives you the chance to stand up to your fears\, overcome them\, and to seize the day. \n\n\n\nHow to Celebrate National Face Your Fears Day \n\n\n\nConquer the world by conquering the little things in life that might cause fear! Show some appreciation for National Face Your Fears Day with some of these interesting ideas: \n\n\n\nMake a List of Fears \n\n\n\nOne of the largest ways that fears can retain power is by staying in the dark. When people are able to name their fears and talk about them\, the shroud of mystery is removed and the fears may begin to hold less sway. A super way to celebrate National Face Your Fears Day might be to start by making a list of the various fears that do anything from keeping you paralyzed to just making you jump. If it’s difficult to think of what these fears might be\, perhaps check with a close friend or family member who can help to compile a list. \n\n\n\nFace Your Fears\n\n\n\nOnce that list of fears is made\, it might be helpful to sort it in a way that lists the least fearful items first. When a person is facing their fears\, it often helps to start out very small and then work the way up to something larger. For instance\, if a person has a mild fear of spiders but a huge fear of heights\, maybe they start by having their roommate help them to remove a spider when it appears in the house. And then\, if that goes okay\, move up to other things on the list that are harder until\, eventually\, the activities include things like going to the top of the Empire State Building or skydiving!

SUMMARY:World Homeless Day
DESCRIPTION:The last time a global survey of homelessness was attempted by the United Nations (in 2005)\, statistics showed that homelessness is on the rise. In fact\, it was estimated that more than 100 million people worldwide are homeless\, and at least 1.5 billion people lacked housing that was adequate. \n\n\n\nIt is with this in mind that World Homeless Day is observed. \n\n\n\nHow to Observe World Homeless Day\n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, data shows that homelessness has been steadily rising over the past ten years or so. Learn about ways to observe this day that might make a difference in the life of a homeless person: \n\n\n\nRaise Awareness for Homelessness Locally\n\n\n\nOn this day\, many people can honor the day by helping to raise awareness for the homeless in your own community. Grassroots campaigns and fundraisers work at the local level\, while taking advantage of the increased publicity and solidarity that a global platform has the ability to provide. \n\n\n\nUse this Day as an opportunity to educate people about the homeless in your local area\, the infrastructure that already exists to help them and how it can be improved. \n\n\n\nLearn the Risk Factors of Homelessness\n\n\n\nHomelessness is a particular problem in Western countries and is one of the most pressing social issues today. Some of the problems with homelessness have to do with increased housing costs\, particularly in very high cost of living countries in Europe\, such as England\, Ireland and Belgium. \n\n\n\nBut in most places\, there exist risk factors that keep people from being able to sustain adequate housing on a long-term basis. Knowing this can be helpful for those who have a relationship with someone who might be at risk. Some of these risk factors for chronic homelessness include: \n\n\n\n·        Physical Health. When people have a severe illness\, whether chronic or unexpected\, they often have trouble paying their medical bills which compound and make it difficult for them to have the finances to pay for housing. This is likely less of a factor in countries where the cost of medical care is included as part of the social well-being of the general public. \n\n\n\n·        Mental Health. Various problems with mental health\, such as schizophrenia\, bipolar disorder\, or anxiety disorder\, can limit a person’s ability to hold down a job\, be responsible for housing and manage relationships related to housing. \n\n\n\n·        Substance Use and Addictions. The use of drugs\, whether illicit\, prescription or alcohol-related\, can be predictors for homelessness because this affects financial responsibility\, personal care\, and relationships. \n\n\n\n·        Prior Homelessness or Frequent Transitions. Those who have been without housing in the past (perhaps as children) or who have experienced frequent moves and housing transitions are considered vulnerable as they have less connection and stability. \n\n\n\nMake a Donation to a Charity for Vulnerable People\n\n\n\nSometimes\, getting involved means helping meet an immediate need that will reduce or prevent the risk in certain individuals. Although people’s hearts might be tugged on by someone begging for money by holding up a cardboard sign on the street\, in most cases it is better to give to those charities who can use the finances more effectively. These organizations are filled with professionals who are dedicated to trying to put an end to this social problem of homelessness. \n\n\n\nKRCC operates 2 shelters in the area. SUMMARY:National Grouch Day
DESCRIPTION:National Grouch Day on October 15 sends out notices to all the grouches of the world to be their truest grouch. If you are a grouch\, today is your special day. According to Sesame Street Magazine\, the day celebrates all grouches and their way of life.  \n\n\n\nSometimes grumps give backhanded compliments. “Your house looked horrible until you painted it.” Other times they don’t give them at all. Noise\, silence\, general activity makes a grouch generally unpleasant.  \n\n\n\nAs per the Merriam-Webster dictionary\, a grouch is described as: \n\n\n\n·        a person who complains frequently or constantly \n\n\n\n·        a habitually irritable or complaining person \n\n\n\nIt seems that a grouch may be happy (although they would never admit it) only when others are unhappy and grouchy.  It is then that they feel most comfortable with having others share in their grumpy\, cantankerous\, surly world with them. \n\n\n\nNational Grouch Day would be a good time to send a grouch e-card and then ask a friend\, whether they be a grouch or not\, to come on over\, sit back\, share some popcorn\, relax and watch the movie Grumpy Old Men! \n\n\n\nNATIONAL GROUCH DAY HISTORY\n\n\n\nThis Sesame Street-inspired holiday has been celebrated since at least 1976 and celebrates the grouch’s way of life.  \n\n\n\nGrouch FAQ \n\n\n\nQ. Who were some famous grouches?A. Most famous grouches are fictional. They include names like Oscar the Grouch\, Archie Bunker\, and the Grinch. \n\n\n\nQ. What word is the opposite of grouch?A. A person who is a happy camper is someone who is generally joyful and satisfied. \n\n\n\nHow can you improve your mood? https://www.tenethealth.com/healthy-living/corporate-content/15-ways-to-boost-your-mood

SUMMARY:National Mammography Day - Breast Cancer Awareness - Wear Pink!
DESCRIPTION:Every year on the third Friday in October\, National Mammography Day joins in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month to remind all women their best defense is early detection. \n\n\n\n#NationalMammographyDay\n\n\n\nCancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States according to the CDC. That’s why a mammogram can detect a problem before there is any outward physical sign. The CDC statistics also report that breast cancer is the most common form of cancer diagnosed among women. Screenings and breast exams are a part of the early detection process.  \n\n\n\nWhen you schedule an annual appointment with your physician\, make sure a breast exam is completed\, too. Tell your doctor about any changes. If you or your doctor notices any signs\, the doctor can order tests\, including a sonogram or mammogram. \n\n\n\nFinally\, a preventative mammogram is the first line of defense. Today’s mammograms offer more vivid detail of the breast tissue. Baseline mammograms are provided around the age of 35 unless family history indicates sooner. The baseline mammogram provides a comparison view for your physician should something develop later down the line. Women age 40 and over are recommended to receive yearly preventative mammograms. \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL MAMMOGRAPHY DAY\n\n\n\nVisit your doctor and set up a mammogram. Encourage loved ones in your life to also schedule a mammogram. Know your family history and share it with your physician. Some with high risk will need to have their first mammography sooner. Use #NationalMammographyDay to post on social media.

SUMMARY:National Apple Day
DESCRIPTION:Share your favorite ways to enjoy an apple! \n\n\n\nNational Apple Day falls on October 21 on the National Day Calendar as a day to celebrate all things apple! This food holiday is dedicated to promoting the rich cultural and historical significance of apples\, as well as the importance of orchards and apple-related products in agriculture and heritage.  \n\n\n\n#NATIONALAPPLEDAY\n\n\n\nIn 1990\, the charity Common Ground in the UK as a way to raise awareness about the diversity of apple varieties\, encourage the preservation of traditional orchards\, and promote the consumption of locally grown apples. Common Ground’s founders\, Sue Clifford and Angela King\, wanted to reconnect people with the land and its fruits\, emphasizing the importance of local and sustainable food production. \n\n\n\nThere are a suggested amount of over 7\,000 recognized apple varieties globally. However\, the number of apple varieties in the world is vast and can be quite challenging to quantify precisely. There are thousands of apple cultivars\, each with its own unique characteristics in terms of flavor\, appearance\, texture. Because we use  apples are used for a variety reasons\, such as fresh consumption\, baking\, or cider production\, new varieties are continuously being developed.

SUMMARY:National Frankenstein Friday
DESCRIPTION:National Frankenstein Friday\, on the last Friday in October\, recognizes author Mary Shelly\, the novel Frankenstein\, or the Modern Prometheus\, her characters\, Dr. Frankenstein and the monster. Dating back to the 1800s\, Frankenstein’s monster is one of the best-known horror characters of all time. \n\n\n\nThe novel by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851) tells the story of a young scientist\, Victor Frankenstein. While she published the first edition of Frankenstein in 1818 anonymously\, the first 500 copies sold out. However\, the public believed her husband\, Percy Shelley\, to be the author. Then in 1823\, Mary Shelley published a new edition under her name. Another edition in 1831 included Shelley’s explanation about how the story came to be. This version is the one modern readers are the most familiar with today. \n\n\n\nThe film world has created more than 60 movies or shorts on the theme of Frankenstein. Edison Studios produced the very first film version\, Frankenstein\, in 1910. \n\n\n\nAccording to some sources\, the day is observed on August 30th in honor of Mary Shelley’s birthday.  \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE FRANKENSTEIN FRIDAY\n\n\n\nWe have many ideas about how to celebrate this holiday. Give one or several of them a try. \n\n\n\n\nWatch a movie featuring Frankenstein or read the original book written by Mary Shelly. Dress as Dr. Frankenstein or his monster.\n\n\n\nFind out who Frankenstein is on Frankenstein Friday.\n\n\n\n\n\nRead both editions of the book. Seek out other novels by Mary Shelley or learn about her history.\n\n\n\nDraw your version of Frankenstein’s monster.\n\n\n\nWrite a poem in honor of the day. Attend a stage production of Frankenstein.\n\n\n\nBake cookies in the shape of the monster.\n\n\n\nConduct an electricity experiment in science class in honor of the day.\n\n\n\nHost a Frankenstein party. Play trivia and hand out prizes.

SUMMARY:National First Responder's Day - Thank a First Responder
DESCRIPTION:October 28th sets aside National First Responders Day to honor the men and women who act quickly when an emergency is at hand. \n\n\n\n#NationalFirstRespondersDay\n\n\n\nFirst responders dedicate their lives to save lives. They are the people who run toward a crisis while the rest of the world flees. According to the Department of Homeland Security\, 4.6 million career and volunteer first responders support the communities where they live. They are firefighters\, police\, emergency medical technicians (EMT)\, paramedics\, and 911 operators. In an emergency\, they’re the first on the scene. These dedicated professionals answer the call when a crisis arises\, often putting their own lives on the line. \n\n\n\nServing as a national day of gratitude\, we pay tribute to their endless hours and around the clock service provided to their communities. As one of the most dangerous jobs in the country\, the day also pays tribute to the fallen first responders. According to the CDC\, 97 firefighters and 155 police officers die each year in the line of duty. Additionally\, their rate of occupational injury is higher than the national average. Often\, the very people saving lives are our neighbors\, friends and family members. And their families know the price they pay for their dedication to the job. And even though they are an integral part of our communities\, their sacrifices go beyond the hours they work. They face high stress\, often daily. The trauma they see wears on them both mentally and physically. Many experience Post Traumatic Stress. Long periods away from family add stress to their relationships\, too. \n\n\n\nNational First Responders Day is also a call for action. First responders deserve our support. Through resources and awareness\, first responders can live healthier more productive lives and pass their knowledge and skills on to the next generation of first responders\, too. \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL FIRST RESPONDERS DAY\n\n\n\nThe day provides you with an opportunity to recognize a first responder in your life. You might be surprised at how many you know. If their service is voluntary\, you may only know about their day job. Offer to treat them to their favorite beverage or buy their next meal. Be supportive of their family\, too. More importantly\, support programs that improve services to first responders. Connect with a first responder who came to your rescue and thank them. Let them know you appreciate their dedication and sacrifice.

SUMMARY:National Cat Day - Calling all Cat Moms and Dads!
DESCRIPTION:National Cat Day on October 29th is the purrfect day to give extra attention to your feline friends.  \n\n\n\nCats make excellent companions. They rarely miss you\, but when they do\, you sure know it. Awareness days such as this one urge pet lovers to adopt from a local shelter. The day also reminds us that neutering and spaying our furry companions helps reduce the abandoned population. \n\n\n\nShelters are full of cats and kittens in need of forever homes. These feline fur babies come with as many personalities as they do colors and coats. They curl into our hearts and will just as quickly remind us they decide who they love. Whether they were born in the shelter\, surrendered or abandoned\, 3.4 million find their way to a shelter. \n\n\n\nWhen considering the adoption of a furbaby\, take your time. Each shelter animal will touch your heart\, so be sure to find a life-long love. \n\n\n\n\nConsider your lifestyle. Will you have time for an active kitten or will an adult cat be more to your pace?\n\n\n\nMake multiple visits before making a choice. Sometimes\, the purrfect cat will choose you.\n\n\n\nSpend one-on-one time with the cat so you have some bonding meowments and her true personality comes through.\n\n\n\nDo other members of your fur family need to be considered? If so\, be sure to introduce them to be sure their personalities mesh.\n\n\n\nWhen you bring your new family member home\, have a space ready for him to decompress and adjust to his new abode. Don’t be surprised if he hides at first. This is normal cat behavior.
